Joanna, Sorry to hear about that. You haven't been affected by the Snow Leopard data loss bug by chance (I think it is fixed in 10.6.2)? That can lead to loss of user data, but only under certain circumstances if you have logged in as a guest user. If thats the case, then google for the recovery opt...
