Matt - forgot to add that a lot of people recommend plain water or very weak stop bath. Apparently you can get pinholes with standard strength stop.

Re: Adox CHS 50 film
I always presoak film - it ensures even development. With Adox you really have to keep your temperatures for all solutions as close as possible, or you will find a slight 'rippling' along the edges of the film. It is fairly harmless though :D The emulsion is very soft when wet, so please be careful ...

Re: HC-110 vs D-76 developers
They're both great actually. I am currently experimenting with Dilution G for roll film and it works beautifully - I do think the times (roughly 18 mins) would be a bit numbing for sheet film though. Dilution H is a better compromise for sheet film and again works beautifully. If you can't be arsed ...

Re: Still dreaming of 5x4
To give an analogy to something I else I do. As well as being a photographer I also play the guitar. Now, I love rock music and have both a Fender Strat and an old Jackson guitar. The Jackson has pickups that make it sound completely different to the strat. With both guitar you can play rock. BUT i...

I really miss MXV - they were a great source of reasonably priced gear. He actually personally delivered my DeVere 504 all the way from the shop to here (Dundee) and it was included in the price! A great shame they're gone - they weren't rip-off merchants and you could always guarantee that if somet...

Re: Books on developing negs
Hope you enjoy them Charles. I've never read Way Beyond . . so I'm hoping someone gets fed up and does an Oxfam with a copy  I've spent a portion of this weekend going through The Negative again - it is a hell of a read and a lot to take in initially, but re-reading it makes you realise what a ...

Charles - just out of curiosity, what did he lend you?
Going through this made me pick up the Negative and have a good go through again. It's a total masterwork. Inspired me to mix up some D23 too!

Phil Davis - Beyond The Zone System - just checked it - full of curves and metering and tests to determine N numbers, step wedges etc etc.It can be had very cheaply from alibris in the States for not much postage - sort of sounds like it might be what you are after. In fact - here y'go http://btzs.o...

Re: Home Processing
You can process roll film immensely cheaply - a good Paterson tank and a cupboard for loading, and a kitchen sink and a washing up bowl for the wet stuff! If you don't want to go to the expense of a changing bag, then wait till night  Seriously though, I've processed tons of 120 with a Paterson...

Still thinking: Zone System Manual is old, but great and still relevant. Fred Pickers Zone VI Workshop book - quite simplified but I find it a very good book Phil Davies - Beyond The Zone System - again very interesting John Blakemore's Black And White Photography Workshop - a superb book. Steve Mul...

There's plenty of resources, some that come to mind are: Massive Development Chart (OK it isn't a book, but there's a ton of data on there . . . all to be taken as a starting point) http://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php Bookwise, Adam's The Negative is a masterwork, but it requires a lot of studi...

Re: balda baldix 120 frame overlap
Hi Chris - I take it you have seen this: http://www.cameramanuals.org/pdf_files/balda_baldix_6x6.pdf if you have, I would say see how it goes lining up the numbers under the red window if you can (though of course that might muck up the mechanism) - you have plenty of space to play with on a 120. So...

Re: Paper negatives
Kentmere used to be one of the faster papers, but you are still in the extremely low ISO range - I would say about 6 is a good starting point - I would definitely ere on the side of caution and go for a longer exposure than you would think . . there's nothing worse than shouting at a tray full of de...
Phil You could always use Ilford's ID-11 (isn't it the same as D76 anyway?). ID-11 datasheet: http://www.ilfordphoto.com/Webfiles/2011427133131459.pdf
Hi Thingy - yeah I know they're identical, and I would probably mix my own anyway (cough cough  ) but it is more the principle...

And TMAX 100 and Tri-X . . and their chemicals (D76! HC 110! Selenium!!)
All really great products. I hope the traditional arm can survive though I'd read that there have been rumblings of getting rid of it for a while - it would be a very very sad day.
