Re: Seeking Field Camera Suggestions

Having used a Ebony RSW I would agree that it is fast and fool proof for wide to normal lenses but take it out in extremely wet conditions for while and I found it became unusable as the wood swelled making focusing virtually impossible. I guess that's only an issue if you like to photograph in suc...

Re: The Heathrow gauntlet

I do worry about the day that they want me to put my camera or lenses in the hold. Why? I do this routinely and have never had a problem. I pack the lenses and other gear tightly in the camera bag with clothes to make sure they can't jiggle about and then dump the camera bag in a fairly anonymous-l...

Re: Hi everyone

Sorry to hear that, Bruce. Another loss to the digital steamroller… :( loading DDS's is a pain but if you have enough you can load them all at once and keep them in the fridge for when you need them and, whilst it's obviously not the same as Velvia, Kodak colour negative stock offers superb tonality...

I just use an old black fleece which also doubles as an extra layer if it gets cold…. :D

Re: Ebony Wood

We all love Ebony cameras here, don't we. Well, some of us do anyway. This is nothing to do with cameras but is Bob Taylor of Taylor Guitars talking about the worlds sources for Ebony wood. Just thought it might be of interest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anCGvfsBoFY An interesting and enjoyable...

Re: Velvia discontinuation

I suspect the reporter should have referred to reversal film rather than just film. But we are where we are. I don't have much experience of Portra but Ektar scans beautifully. Anyone got experience of these two emulsions? I've been using Portra (both flavours) and Ektar a fair bit over the last co...

Re: Dodging or burning?

'Burning' increases the amount of light reaching the paper (making the print darker) and 'dodging' holds back the light (leading to a lighter print in the area being 'dodged'). So, in the sense of the appearance of the final image, burning would be the equivalent of using a grad although, in terms o...

Re: Time to stock up on Portra

I wouldn't worry too much. Filing for Chapter 11 doesn't mean that the end is nigh. It just provides a 'breathing space' during which time the firm can restructure and, hopefully, regain solvency. Some businesses continue to trade for several years in this state. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapter...

Re: Filters for Colour Transparencies

If you are printing 'traditionally' (i.e. Cibachrome), or you feel that the tranny is the 'definitive' version of your image, then a set of warm-up and cool-down filters is advisable. If you're scanning and Photoshopping then they're a strictly 'nice-to-have'. However, a lot of the time you probably...

Re: The way this Board is run

OK. Enough is enough. Positions are getting entrenched and nobody seems willing to compromise. Either we end up with an unresolved stalemate or those doing the complaining realise that perhaps a less confrontational approach might be of benefit. I'm sure Joanna and the team are prepared to listen to...

Good point. Does simply being a large-format photographer mark one out as an eccentric? I guess it probably does... :D

I'll do you a trade: one or two of our eccentrics for some of your cheese.
Two of my favourite French cheeses come from the Franche-Comtè: Morbier and Comté. So, let's see, who's looking very eccentric round here....

stuck in the middle between a set of Luddites and the rest of us
Coming from someone who suggests that people who "shoot film then scan then use Photoshop ... don't have full commitment to the spirit of LF photography", this is a litle rich don't you think? ;)

Re: Thinking of jumping into LF

What movements do I "really" need for landscapes.
As a bare minimum, front tilt and front rise/fall. Rear tilt is useful for changing perspective but isn't essential. Swing, lateral shift and rear rise are strictly nice-to-haves.
