Scanning colour negatives, a mini guide

Hi I've just put together a quick article on scanning colour negatives which I thought may be of interest to those still using large format colour film like myself. Obviously it's just an overview of how I do conversions so take ideas and apply in your own way, or even better suggest better ways if ...

Re: Seeking Field Camera Suggestions

Well when you're hiking through and camping in the mountains of the Outer Hebrides with pretty much none stop summer rain for a number of days and the camera locks up from the wood swelling a number of words come to mind. A screwdriver may well fix it but if you have not got one then there is not mu...

Re: Seeking Field Camera Suggestions

Having used a Ebony RSW I would agree that it is fast and fool proof for wide to normal lenses but take it out in extremely wet conditions for while and I found it became unusable as the wood swelled making focusing virtually impossible. I guess that's only an issue if you like to photograph in such...

Re: 10x8 supports?

No longer have a 8x10 but when I did I had no problems with a Kirk BH1 and a Gitzo series 5 tripod with a heavy Toyo field camera. You did obviously have to be careful to ensure any vibrations had gone after touching it before taking pics though.

WTB: Walker Titan SF

I'm on the lookout for a Walker Titan SF 5x4 camera - if anyone has one they are thinking of parting with please drop me a PM. Alternatively would also be interested in a Walker 5x7 or 8x10.

Many thanks,
Tristan Campbell

Re: Exposure or scanning question

Hi Graham It sounds like your metering is absolutely fine assuming the meter is accurate - just place the darkest shadows at -2 and let the rest fall as they may. There is little chance you'll have overexposed to the extent your highlights will have been clipped unless you make a serious mistake in ...

Re: c41 processing marks

Just a quick notes to say thanks for all the suggestions. I think I have this under control now - not perfect as I think there is still some contamination of the reels causing excess development at the edges of the negs but the improvement is huge. I dev'd some negs last night and they are the best ...

Re: 5x7 film holder confusion

Thanks Andrew, much appreciated. So am I right in thinking that there are three types of 5x7 holders which outwardly all look the same rather than just two? - 5x7in, 13x18cm and 4 3/4 x 6 1/2 in. Thanks, Tristan

5x7 film holder confusion

Hi I bought an extremely cheap 5x7 (worn and heavy) monorail some time ago and have recently got some outdated film and some film holders to try it with. However having just tried to put the film in this evening I've realised the 4 holders I have vary in size ... The 4 I bought advertised were as 13...

Re: c41 processing marks

Thanks Chris. I'll be developing a batch of negs in the next few days so will try using a combi-plan tank for the stabiliser. Thinking back the point at which the issue first occurred it was when I tried a different make of chemicals from Fuji which I had always used (for hundreds of sheets with no ...

Re: c41 processing marks

Hi Baxter - that's really interesting thanks. I've not come across issues with the jobo and stabiliser before. I do put it in the jobo with just a small amount of agitation to ensure it covers the sheets evenly. I think this could be the issue, I'll dig deeper. Thanks Tristan.

Re: c41 processing marks

Thanks Jonathan, I don't think it's splashing either, bubbles are my current possible theory - I'm planning on ensuring everything is level for the next batch. I think I've also experienced what you describe but not as often as this issue. I'm pretty sure it's the outer negs mostly affected when I'v...

Re: c41 processing marks

Hi Dave I have two reels - one with the paddles and an older one without. I always use them on the reel that has them. Usually I use both together in a larger drum - it seems to affect film on either reel. Developed individually in a smaller tank I've not noticed any link to one specific reel. Origi...
