Re: B&W processing and scanning help sought.

I made a "Black & White Scanning Workflow" tutorial some years back : http://oomz.net/bw_workflow/

I still use it exactly as such, it's the best quality/price process I found...

You can take excellent images with a hundred years old lens, some of them are pretty much legendary. More moderns lens will give you contrastier images for sure, and probably a more standard and "safe" shutter, but then again for the price of a new lens, you could buy 20 old one and would more than ...

The worst is the ParcelForce "handling fee" on US items.

You can buy hundreds of pounds of stuff from china without problem (and 0.00 fee), but anything over USD 50 will get taxed, and not just VAT, custom... the worst bit is ParcelForce making you pay the delivery all over again.

If you use a wetting agent, there shouldn't be water sticking on the film. If there is, use more wetting agent ! Just don't touch the film with /anything/ -- the wet emulsion is very fragile. I used to follow the "2 drops of washing liquid" method of wetting, and that never worked properly. Now I us...

The Chamonix 45N-1 back is not on threads, so you can position it pretty much every way you want when framing. I usually loosen the screws, then take the back with both hands and put it just the way I want my focal plane to be, then lock it down and affine with the front and/or focus screw. The came...

As far as film holders go, I've now tossed all the Epson 4990 scanning holders into the trash and use a nice pane of very finely frosted glass from my local glass shop. Frosted side down, I made 4 'feets' for the glass pane using layers of paper until I reached my favourite focus on thr scanner. I g...

Just imagine color scanning as a matrix instead of as a 'curve'. Each hue will have a small potential percentage of error; some will have considerably more than others. Thats just for the sensor... Then you factor in the small percentage or error of the emitting light, the small percentage of error ...

I finally scanned one I did that day ! Out of five, I think 2 are good, one might need some "work". I had pushed the exposure a notch to (try to) get some tones of the black paint, with only partial success.. I reduced the overall exposure in photoshop, and cleaned a *@(&(@#*#( contrail. Otherwise t...

it's possible that the lens board itself could interfere with the back group: ie prevent it being screwed/mounted properly. However it doesn't explain uniform softness in corners, regardless of the lens position. Are you sure your film holders keep the film flat ? The sheet are not sliding in the wr...

I use a 240mm Sironar-N on 8x10, Copal 3 and very big, but lots of coverage. it was about £120 on the bay. I also have the Symmar-S from a lot I bought, but I didn't use it in the end. On 300mm I also prefer the Sironar, it's just slightly smaller than the Symmar-S of the same age, and apparently ha...
