Developing really old glass plates?

I recently bought an old Thornton Pickard reflex http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattbigwood/sets/72157625333332925/ With it came six plate holders, I opened one to discover a glass plate in it, and judging by the weight of them I think the others are also loaded. I don't know whether the plates have b...

Re: Portrait Lens on Toyo 5x4

Hi Ed

I don't know if you're after a modern lens, but I have a 203mm coated Kodak Ektar from the 60's which I have used on my MPP for tight portraits. The lens covers up to 5"x7" and my example at least is very sharp with good contrast.

Re: Fungus & mold - opinions sought.

I'm by no means an optical expert, but I gather that mould can eat into the glass, and I'd guess that the contrast of the lenses would be much reduced by the mould, and would particularly suffer if you used it to take a picture with the camera pointing towards a light source, but I'm sure others on ...

Re: any portrait photographers here?

Richard Avedon's 'In the American West' is a collection of black and white portraits all shot against a plain white background using 10"x8". The mystique of this project was somewhat dented when I read that Avedon had shot 18,000+ sheets of Tri-X throughout the project, but the whole thing has been ...

Re: Jolly Japes with 8x10

This looks very familiar to me - http://www.lf-photo.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1802 I've since taken the advice offered by forum members and now use the manual base for agitation, but on the last batch of processing I did there were still lines from where the fins in the lid appeared to be in...

Re: WTB: Graflex 5x4 Speed Graphic

The chap who is selling the Crown Graphic on eBay is pretty reputable - I bought a Speed Graphic from him a few years ago without any issues. Not cheap though - if you look at his feedback he seems to buy them fairly cheaply from the states and sell them on eBay uk.

Re: Hello

Hi Ed Did you used to work for the Echo in Cheltenham? I'm also a fromer press photographer, and worked for the Stroud News and journal/Wilts and Glos Standard etc from 1986-2002. My old chief photographer used to tell me about how he began his career with a VN plate camera, and I too have been dabb...

I'll second what Andrew has said - I bought my 10x8 camera from Eddie on the US LF forum and he was great to deal with.

Re: MPP MicroPress

Hi Ian

I've just run across this post, so it may be too late, but I've got two MPP Micropress cameras, one in a better cosmetic condition than the other.

Drop me an email if I can be of assistance.

Re: What went wrong here???

Thanks Joanna and Patrick - I didn't use the base, I just rocked it manually, left to right and backwards and forwards alternately, giving it constant agitation throughout the development. Patrick - I'd love you to try developing a sheet or two of 10x8 in your orbital - then I can see if there's a l...

Re: What went wrong here???

Thanks Joanna

I used 200ml of developer, but maybe I needed more. I did wonder if there is a light leak in the orbital - I used it manually.

I might try tray developing in complete darkness next time to see what happens.
