Paper negatives
I've bought a box of Kentmere paper and I'm planning on trying out my Thornton Pickard Junior Reflex with the paper in the film holders. Can anyone give me a rough idea of the sensitivity of paper (I'll do some tests once I've got into the swing of it) - I seem to recall it was pretty low, 6 or 12 A...

Re: Black tape for Fidelity dark slides
There was an article in a 2007 edition of the MPP Users' Club publication which quoted the experience someone had repairing film holder hinges, and it states that he uses 'Williams Self-Adhesive Repair Cloth' (WSARC code CPA 380) from Holland in pieces 10x20cm at £2.10 per piece. The article also su...

WTB: vintage Patent-Rollex rollfilm back
Might be a longshot, but I'm after a Patent-Rollex rollfilm back for my 1930s Thornton Pickard http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattbigwood/5203474081
The condition isn't important as long as it's working.

Cutting down 5"x4" film?
I'm finally getting round to trying out the Thornton Pickard Junior reflex I bought last year http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattbigwood/5204069070/ I managed to get some film inserts for the plate holders which (I think) takes three and a quarter by two and a quarter film. Can anyone suggest the best...

Re: Developing Plates
Hi Susie,
I think John's right. I bought a 1930s Thornton Pickard which came with a number of two and a quarter by three and a quarter plates. When I developed them they were heavily veiled in dichroic base fog.

Re: Lacock Abbey: worth it?
As Ian said, parking in the village is free, but difficult to find a space in the school holiday season. There's a large National Trust car and coach park a short walk from the Abbey and museum which is free for NT members and £2 (I think) otherwise. As others have said, the museum is small, as is t...

Re: The Most Important Photographer of the Late 20th Century
I was lucky enough to go to an exhibition at the V&A in 1989 celebratIng the 150th anniversary of photography and there was a huge print of the picture of the skinhead sitting on a wall with his head in his hands which stopped me in my tracks . I'd recommend the recently-published 'Seacoal' book whi...

Re: The Most Important Photographer of the Late 20th Century
Chris Killip springs to mind for his documentary work in the North East in the 1980s and his book In Flagrante. A lot of that work was shot on 5x4, as was his series on the Pirelli tyre factory.

Hi Colin
I no longer own a Mk 8, but I seem to remember the catch had to be pushed upwards, towards the centre of the focussing screen, to release the cover.

Re: Gallery Exhibition South East England
Super pictures David. I'd love to be able to see the pictures but it's a bit too far to travel from here in Gloucestershire, although earlier this year I did some work in that area and stayed in Eastbourne and was very impressed with the town as it was the first time I'd been there.

Re: Then and Now pictures - advice needed
Hi Patrick, yes it is a Dowding picture, and I scanned the original plate a month or two ago, along with 300 others that are owned by The Gazette in Dursley. That's what started me thinking about this project. There are several of theis with captions like 'The ruins of Yate Court, once home to the B...

Re: Then and Now pictures - advice needed
Thanks for the information - I hadn't really considered that wide-ish lenses would have been all that common in those days.
I've got a couple of books about old cameras, and whilst they list manufacturers and types of lenses there's not any info about what equipment was in use at the time.

Then and Now pictures - advice needed
I'm planning on doing a 'then and now' series of photos, trying to do modern versions as close as possible to the photos of Murray Dowding, a commercial photographer who was active between about 1910 and 1930 in Chipping Sodbury and the surrounding areas north of Bristol: http://britishphotohistory....
