Re: Is this industry really worth it?
France is a land of opportunity, IMHO. I don't think the togs are as aggressively pursuing the lolly as over in the UK. I guess most people there want to do photography properly with painstaking care. What we have learned, is that quantity trumps quality. For a while. Only snag is that France is a v...

Re: Is this industry really worth it?
The fabled silver bullet! I live in the North-East (Cleveland Coast) where there are a LOT of photographers - some famous ones and some good ones. I don't know that any are doing that well, although a couple have been selling prints and cards to local outlets in sufficient numbers to call it an inco...

Re: Hi everyone
Hello Bruce, Colour is not the be all and end all. And Fuji might be letting LF down, but Kodak will be around for a bit longer - I hope. Ilford have adapted to the niche market, so that's more hope. I think the demand for film will continue; then it's a matter of price per sheet to manufacture. I d...

Re: B&W film and ND Grads?
I am not sure if you refer to contrast modulation as a result of dev or post-processing. N-1 or N-2 reduces the overall contrast of the image by making the highlights less bright, but the shadows and mid-tones are relatively unaffected by pulling (in my experience of B&W). The highlights are brought...

Re: B&W film and ND Grads?
Hello Tim,
Ever tried the B&W thing of reducing the dev time (pulling) to bring the highlights in to a manageable area?
Best regards,
Charles

It's not just colour film. It seems that Efke are in trouble too.

Re: Matting and Framing standards?
I am not aware of standards, although the buying public are aware of cheap frames from the likes of Ikea and Hobbicraft which have the sizes 40x50cm and 30x40cm. Beyond that, you're in to the realm of paper sizes and film sizes. Some work OK with each other, but not all - also depends on whether you...

Portrait exhibition
As some of you know, I've been dabbling with vintage lenses for the last couple years. The latest project has resulted in a series of portraits taken of artists in Gallery TS1. It's been quite a learning curve but it was fun, especially the bit where you don't have auto-focus and you have to rely on...

Re: Velvia discontinuation
It'll be a shame to see V50 go - a great film for an immediately pleasant representation of the landscape. As Dave says in his excellent summary: no need to be paralysed by choice. There's also something very tangible about slide film in general. The image is there in my hand. It's something I can o...

Looking for empty 5x7 box
Does anybody have an empty box of 5x7 film which I can have in order to take slides to the lab?
Thanks,
Charles

Re: Polarising filter - coated or non coated?
A rotating mount for a second filter set is generally useful. Maybe not the most used, but invaluable for work with contrasty emulsions like colour transparency or DPP. I would just warn about the extra distance it puts in front of the lens. You will need to be very careful with your wide angle lens...

Re: Small lightproof bag
I don't know it will help, but when I use leaky bellows - not gashes, just pin-pricks and thinned creases - I put my dark cloth over the camera before tripping the shutter. Works for me. Like you with your light seal, I could change the bellows, but this approach is free :D . If you want a small, bl...
