Too small and they fall through the mount holes. Too long they stick out of the back of the lens board. Just file them down on the back once you've screwed them in.

Yep, was just showing an example of what you were talking about. Still, 10 minutes is pretty quick from start to finish, the shooting etc yes but the varnishing takes time to dry properly as you say.
