Re: National Portrait Gallery
Hello Tim, There are several ways of calculating the ratios: comparing surface area, diagonal, longest axis etc. The value of 3.5 to 4 is pretty representative. I am however far less comfortable re your equivalent f stop ratios. John: I took this picture last summer: http://www.citiesandparks.com/pi...

Victoria, Australia
In November, I spent time in Australia with the in-laws. Andrew Plume suggested I show some pics. I'll start with 10 black and white ones. I'll post 10 colour ones at some later date hopefully. All these were shot on pre-1900 lenses - so Victorian photography in more than one sense of the word. Exce...

Canvas backdrop
I am looking to take some portraits against a cloth backdrop. I've seen pictures with what looks like a tarpaulin made of rough cotton, possibly even jute, which I'd like to emulate. The auction site has heavy duty canvas, but I was wondering if anybody had any other recommendations, if possible wit...

Re: RIP
To me, the beauty of LF isn't just the larger neg, it's the abstract sense that can be achieved by choosing different movements Bang on! In fact, side shift enables off-centre perspective too - useful with lines disappearing in to the yonder. For those using older lenses, they're also a convenient ...

Re: RIP
Cough, splutter. You can't take a picture like that! It has to be all in focus, surely.
Maybe somebody else might be going through Oxon on the way to Keswick. Won't help with the rain that is bound to plague us... You could maybe put a message on the Keswick thread.

Re: RIP
I've been away for Christmas, so apologies for the silence. Most of what needed saying has been said however. Ian Grant's addition to the US LF forum brought back many memories. We who run the forum, have tried to implement a couple suggestions. The most noticible is the splitting of the forums so t...

Re: RIP
And then of course, we're still waiting for the Midlands gang to organise a LF meeting of their own. But that would mean more doing and less bluster. Go on Vanman - you do it: it'll be great to discover new parts of the country and fresh faces.
Thanks,
Charles
Thanks,

Re: Lake District Spring 2013
Not sure where I'll be staying, but campsite or YHA will do me. As for camera, I'll use 5x4 mostly but I'll bring 5x7 in case the mood takes me. If a few of us fancy it, I am wondering whether we should try and visit somewhere as a group - somewhere where people are making things, mining, pencil-mak...

Thanks for settling my nerves.
With the sun as low as it is at this latitude, it's hardly a worry. Move 1,000 miles south though...

Myth busting
I have yet again been approached by a lay member of the public who was adamant that the picture should be taken while under the dark cloth. Clearly pointless with any ground glass + dark slide approach. But the myth is so commonly held that I am now wondering where it started. Is there a camera out ...

Hello Andrew,
I can do if you wish. But after the weekend, as things are pretty busy here.
All the best,
Charles

Re: Lake District Spring 2013
April it is then. Feel free to get the word out to your networks and invite friends. The more the merrier. We'll meet up on Friday 12th of April at 7ish at the pub and decide on a plan of action for the weekend. Please bring along suggestions and use this thread to discuss where's good to shoot. Any...

Re: Lake District Spring 2013
Keswick, it is then. :D I propose we meet at the Dog and Gun (2 Lake Road, Keswick, Cumbria CA12 5BT) at 7ish on the Friday evening, depending on weather and individual circumstances. Dates: Easter weekend is the 29/3 to the 1/4 and it will definitely rain then - always does until about noon on the ...

I use Camserve in Herstmonceux regularly and in the past I've used Black on White in Bristol. Both come recommended.
