Re: Epson V750 vs Imacon 949

I'd also be glad to participate in the scanning test, Tim and I are chatting behind the scenes about his new drum scanner, and whilst we have the same scanner we're both using vastly different software to drive it, so even from our own point of view it would be interesting to compare the difference ...

Re: Epson V750 vs Imacon 949

Being a somewhat pedantic person  I would question the logic behind this, as the pixels in the image are square but the inkjet dots are (approximately) round(ish). No matter what the "native resolution" of a printer, it still has to make a best guess as to where to place the relevant dots to ...

Re: Epson V750 vs Imacon 949

DJ, you seem to be confusing printing resolution in dpi with image resolution in ppi. Nope, I am very aware of the difference, if you re-read through my post you will see the two terms are used appropriately in their respective places. :) PPI is the input resolution, DPI is the output resolution. T...

Re: Epson V750 vs Imacon 949

Whats an A3 print, like 12x16"? From a 4x5" transparency you probably wouldn't even need to scan at 1200ppi, I wouldn't expect the difference between drum and flatbed to be that pronounced (unless you're scanning an imaage which is really dark/underexposed or all shadow). An Epson printers's native...

Re: Epson V750 vs Imacon 949

Everything is a compromise :? An Epson V7x0 is cheap(ish), is a minimum of fuss and really does a pretty good job for the money, enough for many needs. An Imacon produces visibly superior images to the Epson, again is fairly little fuss to use, but comes at a hefty price tag (several thousands 2nd h...

Alternate (Digital) Processes!

Those clever folks at HP have been listening to traditional photographers wanting to recreate the alternative processes with digital tools. http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-10053-10768 Not my cup of tea, but might be of interest to some of you, I know this is the sort of thing...

Re: Why film

For me it's predominantly image quality: - the very high resolution available on LF film - the quality of the lenses - the movements allowing pin sharp focus front to back lead to ultimately ( operator notwithstanding ) higher image quality, finer detail and more pleasing images. Do I think these ar...

Alternatives to Epson V7xx

For those who are in the market for a scanner, and looking at the options, I've just been made aware of a scanner which might appeal to large format film users. I wasn't aware of this scanner before, and whilst I have no need for more scanners I thought it might be interesting to anyone else thinkin...

Re: Scanning 10x8 on V700. Alignment issues and Newton Rings

Well, that is one sure possible cause of softness. The problem is that the 5x4 scanning is based on the holder being higher than the glass but the 10x8 holder is simply a guide, placed on the glass. If I remember rightly, the cutout in the back edge of the holder tells the software which holder is ...

Drum Scanners on Ebay

Don't know if anyone is interested, but I noticed there are a couple of Howtek 4500 Drum Scanners on eBay, including computers and software to run them. One is going for £750 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Howtek-4500-ScanMaster-Drum-Scanner-SGi-Indy-PC-/330436936591?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Scanners&hash=item4cef...

Re: WTB: IT8 fuji transparency calibration target

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but you can't use the target supplied with Monaco with any other software as the reference file is saved in a proprietary format, I don't mean txt vs doc either, it doesn't use the standard layout or file format for colour target reference files, so you won't b...

Re: Pre-viewing with digital or with instant film?

You say that, Joanna, but you do use your dSLR to quickly survey a site and gauge which shots are the more likely winners Joanna has a DSLR? I'm shocked! There's two sides to this coin as I see it, yes having a viewfinder is a very useful compositional tool, and a digital camera of any sort ...
