Or there's always the old "sun shining, F16 at 1/125th; cloudy, F8 at 1/125th and just go by the label on the developer" approach...
I'm a fan of Mr Adams, too.

Re: Black tape for Fidelity dark slides
Canford sell something they call 'linen masking tape' but which us old-timers know it the one true camera tape. Unfortunately, it's white, not black...

Two Ebonies on eBay at the moment
Can't recall the last time I saw even one, but tonight there are two showing (I'm involved in neither). One SV45TE at £2,750 (buy it now or best offer - looks like two offers at present) and the other a 45S currently at just over the ton - and loads of interest, I suspect. On an aesthetic note - the...

Re: Cutting down 5"x4" film?
Damn, that's an awkward size - Adox is available in quarter plate - 3.25 * 4.25 so if you could live with 3.25 by 2.125 you could get two bits out of one sheet with no wastage. Otherwise, it's three cuts and a wasted bit from 4*5... I recall in my youth adverts for machines/templates to simplify sli...

Re: Mothballs and Lavender
I was just thinking that myself - the 4*5 set I had made for my experimental camera at Custom Bellows were the thick end of a hundred quid, with the VAT and postage. The set I made for myself work fine but the base material is too thick - John Lewis blackout curtain liner. They're also a little twis...

Note that B&H famously keeps orthodox religious hours; it's closed Friday afternoon and all day Saturday.
You can shop all day on Sunday though.

Oh, *nice*.
I rarely do portraiture but I wish I'd made that picture. I'd gladly have that on my wall.

Misread that as 'Platinum' but you may find this interesting; page 205 plus, among others: http://www.archive.org/stream/bookofpho ... latinotype

Re: Ground glass focus screens
Ian,
Apologies for my delayed reply...
Am I still in time to get a couple in the mix? I need them 130 by 106mm, if you'd be so kind. A corner chopped off to let the air out would be nice but is not essential.
Thanks,
Neil

Re: Studio Photography
One quick hint: if you don't have a longer lens, be further away... there's enough image on a 4x5 to use only part of it for portraiture.
Apologies if that's obvious...

Well, at least you can use the leftover egg to make pale omelettes... if you don't mind fortnight-old egg!

Re: Numpti scanning question
<cough> Linux </cough> The Sane and XSane packages have drivers for just about everything there is. It's occasionally the most modern stuff that lacks drivers, since often the manufacturers won't play ball and it takes time for them to be reverse engineered. Good call on the 4870 - there's one just ...

If you can find one - they haven't been made for years - the Epson Photo Perfection 2450 does 4*5 negatives and slides.

Thanks Joanna.
I can see why you might want to flag some topics for notification, but my preference is the 'don't tell unless I ask you'.

Re: Thread subscriptions
Turns out that unticking that global notify didn't stop it anyway. It seems the local untick is required.
But I am seeking a no-notifications: I don't want my email cluttering up with them.
