Re: Lake District Spring 2013

Just a couple points of organisation: (i) if you have not sent me your mobile phone numbers, could I have them so we can all coordinate? If you're not happy with your number being shared among the participants, then don't worry. (ii) how many photography widows will there be? Mrs T is thinking of or...

Re: Shen Hao 6 x 17

Don't have a 617 camera, only the back like you. For me, the movements, especially swing, are really important. I wouldn't sacrifice them in buying a stand-alone 617 camera.

Kodak Portra 160 5x7 sheet film

I have an unopened box of 50 sheets of Portra 160, size 5x7. This is the latest emulsion (not NC or VC). Expiry date is 4/2013 and it has been kept frozen since purchase.
Looking for £320 ono.
Best regards,
Charles

Re: Seeking Field Camera Suggestions

Ebony's are over-priced. The RSW45 has limited movements in order to reduce its weight - it's LF for hiking. It's also a non-folder, which may be a problem for Nomad. Although not wood and brass, the Chamonix is more camera for £600 new . The Chamonix regularly garners good reviews. Can't comment on...

Book on Cartes de Visite

I spotted Victorian Cartes de Visite by R&C Wichard going for a song. It's only a 100 or so pages; it's more about the history than the technology; but there's loads of facts and figures. Still working out how good it is, but it seems a valuable addition at first glance. If anyone was looking for a ...

Re: 5x7 film holder confusion

In my limited experience of a Kodak 2, the answer is yes: the half plate and the 5x7 were the same outward size.

Re: Petzval character

The expensive Petzvals tend to be the f/3 ones. I picked up a 12" f/4 for £450. For how much are the 8" f/4 selling now - £250?
Do the f/3 Petzvals swirl more? Or does the wide-field component merely result in greater blurring?
Thanks,
Charles

Re: Models for LF portraiture

I'll move the Petzval query to a more appropriate category, so we can talk about it at length. You'll need to copy your answer there, Andrew, as a I can't move a single posting.

Here's the welder shot:

Petzval character

This started on another thread , but is better as a stand-alone. Do you reckon a projection lens would swirl in the centre of the image, behind the focussed subject? I know my lens is a camera version, but it really only swirls in the farther reaches of the image circle and then not always. For port...

Re: Models for LF portraiture

Thanks, George. Very kind of you - I am flattered. And relieved as it required 6 sheets of film to get one good one. @John: the main problems were practical. The cows were spooked by my presence. I was near the entrance to get some light and the cows were not keen to go past me. But I was behind a b...

Re: Models for LF portraiture

I'll second all Marizu has said. Explanation is a must. I tell my subject that the picture happens in two stages: focussing and taking. I tell them when I want to alter something, or when I move from one phase to another. It's relaxing for the sitter to know what's going on. And they mustn't move du...

Re: National Portrait Gallery

Because I don't know the theory well enough but it doesn't feel right to say that the f/stop should be divided by 4 as well. Is the dof related to the physical aperture or to the f/stop?
Thanks,
Charles
