Velvia 100F dynamic range confusion.

Hi All, I was just looking at the data sheets for provia 100F, velvia 100 and velvia 100F, provia appears to have a dynamic range of about 5 stops but using the same methodology I used to calculate for provia I get about 3.3 stops for V100F and 3.7 stops for V100, can this be right or are the graphs...

Re: Isle of Purbeck meet up in March?

A huge thanks to Sean for a very enjoyable day. Here are a few of my efforts. EDIT: These are replacements for the rather green versions that I previously posted (just in case anybody gets confused by the comments below  ), hopefully the colours in these work better. Winspit #1 - Portra 160 ht...

Re: Isle of Purbeck meet up in March?

Plan B:  If the weather looks set to be nasty on Saturday morning, we'll meet up in the same place (Worth Matravers car park) and walk down to Winspit instead. On the way down (or back up) from there, there's an old ruined house http://www.seanlewisphotography.co.uk/gallery?album=5&gallery=16...

Re: Still dreaming of 5x4

Hi Jools, Experiences of an LF noob and self confessed gear junky. Which movements? I had an advantage here as my favourite and most used lens with the DLSR is the 24mm Tilt Shift where I'd use tilt to rotate the plane of focus for getting those extreme depth of fields we landscapers crave and verti...

Re: Metering, what's gone wrong?

Thanks everyone, lots to mull over from this thread. Regarding meters, hopefully I can compare readings with those of you going to the Ilse of Purbeck meet in March. One question regarding meter accuracy... If I meter a scene and use the reading to expose on my DLSR (I know) and it gives a good expo...

If that worked why not stick with it ?
Hi Clive,

It worked some of the time, depending on how well I stabbed :) I'm on a quest to get consistently usable exposures which is why I'm trying alternatives.

Paul.

Re: Metering, what's gone wrong?

Problem with film, seems unlikely but I'll try shooting some new in-date film alongside the expired (08/2011) stuff which I've been using. I'd be amazed if the film was the problem unless its been stored in an over or something. I've shot slide film over a decade old, uncertain storage, with no not...

Re: Metering, what's gone wrong?

Hello Paul, I've been quite busy and have only just looked at this thread on my calibrated monitor. Are you sure you are that far out? OK the sky is definitely dark and that could be a mistake: you say the first thing I did was meter the highlights in the foreground and the sky, this indicated a .6...

Re: Metering, what's gone wrong?

Thanks everyone for your thoughts... I've now ruled out the spot meter as a problem, it seems to be calibrated fine, at least it's within 1/3 of a stop of the spot meter in my 5DMkII. So I'm think I'm left with the following... Problem with film, seems unlikely but I'll try shooting some new in-date...

Re: Metering, what's gone wrong?

Hello Paul, I also had a lot of underexposed picture problems in the beginning, also using RVP50 transparencies and a combined spot meter and incident meter. I was only using the spot meter and tried to meter the brightest and darkest tones and place them. Sometimes it worked well, sometimes not. T...

Re: Metering, what's gone wrong?

Have you checked the accuracy of your spotmeter in case the problem is with the meter? Do you have a way of checking it against another meter? Just a thought, Jenny Hi Jenny, It's a good thought :) I think it's accurate, I did a test a while back using the readings from the spot meter to set exposu...

I've found dissolving a jar of coffee in a can of red-bull and using that to wash down a couple of pro-plus pills usually does the job

Re: Metering, what's gone wrong?

Morning Mr Dunning! Remember when you first started your venture into LF, I did say to you that Velvia was a pig if you fouled it up ;) When I'm out and about I use a variety of techniques. A couple I got from Charlie Waite and others are as previous posters have said. The huge problem with exposur...

Re: Metering, what's gone wrong?

Hi Paul I won't comment on specifics of your shot as its hard to say without seeing the film on a lightbox how bad it is. Raw scans do always look dark, that par for the course. However as far as metering goes I would bin the idea of finding the average reading between the lightest highlight and th...

Re: Metering, what's gone wrong?

Hi Ian, Thanks for the reply, I was starting to think I wouldn't get one :) I just had a look at Richard's blog entry on exposure, very interesting, thanks for pointing me towards it. It's funny, when I started out I'd stand there for ages trying to find a mid tone to meter from, later I started doi...
