Re: ND filters for long exposures

After recent images posted here in this forum I'd think twice of buying a Lee filter if I wanted an ND filter, they seem to suffer worse than uncoated glass filters in terms of causing internal lens/filter reflections. That aside I think only a good MC coated MC glass screw in filter will give the m...

Re: Shen Hao - used market

A heads up for Ian - Zoikes, his Shen Hao is in the classifieds right now, it'll sell very quickly (may have done already). I bought a printer off him 10 days ago and his prices, descriptions etc are very fair and accurate, I'm extremely happy with my printer. I'd have paid more via ebay and the sam...

Re: Filter fogging

There's a silicone liquid that people use, I was given some way back in the late 1970's by a friend who also worked for me and we'd use it on glass filters ocassionally. I think I still have it somewhere but it was a small unlabelled bottle. He used it to stop problems with his glasses fogging up. N...

Re: Calculating exposures

The little Russian Leningrad lightmeters are a good cheap backup solution, I had one sat idle for years,in fact I'd never usedit, but then tested it a couple of years ago before loaning it to a board member, mine is surprisingly accurate and they can be found for less than £5, being selenium cell th...

Re: Ground glass focus screens

Ian, How thick are they in approximately 4*5 (I can let you know exact dimensions later when I get back from Rio tomorrow) and how much? I could use a one or two for my homebrew camera, which is making do with ground-plastic 1mm sheet at present. Neil Usually the screens are nominally 2mm thick and...

Re: Where's the best place to go to get a lens board cut?

One caveat: while playing with wooden lens boards for my homebrew camera, I originally used two pieces of 2mm spruce ply to make the board (different sizes to make the light seal) and discovered that I had to cut one layer away completely to get a good mount for both the lens collar and the back el...

Re: which black and white film?

Ian, Thanks for the extra information, which I will put to good use as I now feel really confident about using Adox films. Very nice photograph. Falling Foss? Yes this deceptive image was made about 10 years before at the top edge :) It's cropped becasue the Polaroid E6 (100D) quickload leaked ligh...

Re: Where's the best place to go to get a lens board cut?

Great stuff Ian. I got confused by all the different graphics out there. My lens board appears to be the graphic view one in the link below http://www.skgrimes.com/products/lens-boards/graphic However that comment about sheet metal is genius. I have managed to locate a supplier on ebay who do pre-c...

Re: which black and white film?

I find that CHS25 works well with the uncoated lenses. The blurb goes on about its 60-year old recipe - I don't know if that has anything to do with it. You often here people mistakenly say it's an old fashioned emulsion. in fact these Adox - Schleussner designed films were way ahead at their time ...

Re: E6 DIY processing?

They should be OK, you can usually tell which may have had fixer in before. Make sure you label them well - bottles and tops to prevent contamination in the future. If you've got some washing soda (sodium carbonate) you could mix a bit up and use that to clean the two you'll use for developer that w...

Re: Services Forum

It's not so much about old & new because many issues are similar. After all making a new lens board, bellows, focus screen is justas applicable to a modern camera as something 100 years old. Both my quarter plate and half plate Houghton's also take modern lenses and a roll film back fits the 1/4 pla...

Re: Where's the best place to go to get a lens board cut?

As it happens I do have 4"x4" boards, wooden and aluminium and thanks to your question I've realised the aluminium one fits my pre-Anninversary Spped Graphi so thanks :D As an aside I had some aluminium sheet that I made lens board and bag bellows mounting frames from in the mid 70's. It's approx 3m...

Re: which black and white film?

Ian, Thank you for the very informative answer to my query. Yes I do remember how big your 10 x 8 camera is. As I recall it was raining when we met and we sheltered under it for half an hour or so 'til it eased off ! :D I think I will give Foma film a try, based on your comments. Alan The reality o...

Re: Filters for Colour Transparencies

This discussion opens a wider can of worms because you can see many long exposures dawn and dusk shot on Velvia with magenta casts, they seem almost the norm, but I've never had that problem when I was still shooting Velvia, and I never used a filter for long daylight exposures. Are they over doing...
