Re: National Portrait Gallery
You have to scale the aperture by four times to get the equivalent depth of field for 4x5. Hence a 150mm f/5.6 is equivalent to a 37.5mm f/1.4 Offtopic: I make it more like a 3.5 factor between 4x5 and 35mm. Well because the aspect ratios are different you need to think about how the images would b...

Re: National Portrait Gallery
I was skipping through the Gallery on friday afternoon and stopped dead in my tracks and gazed for ages at an photo image of a scientist who'd won nobel prize for describing the life-cycle of cells. The style of the image was consistent with that cellular theme. It was a very large image (circa 3mt...

Hi Tim, It's desperately embarrassing to respond to your kind note and detailed advice after an inordinate length of time, but I've been totally inactive in the photographic field for almost 6 months (long story) and didn't realise you'd posted this. I've only just started looking at the forum agai...

Re: Is this industry really worth it?
Afternoon all So, is it really worth it trying to make money from our cameras? Right now, I'm feeling that I am working my nuts off for nothing. A couple of years ago when I loved over here to France I decided that it was now or never to try and make a go of it. Now, granted I haven't done too badl...

Re: B&W film and ND Grads?
Interesting discussion from my original request! From the looks of things it seems to be that using a grad on B&W wouldn't hurt at all and in the end is probably more beneficial than trying to faff around in the darkroom. In a way, it's almost like those that foul things up digitally and just try t...

Re: B&W film and ND Grads?
I am not sure if you refer to contrast modulation as a result of dev or post-processing. N-1 or N-2 reduces the overall contrast of the image by making the highlights less bright, but the shadows and mid-tones are relatively unaffected by pulling (in my experience of B&W). The highlights are brough...

Re: B&W film and ND Grads?
Hello Tim, Ever tried the B&W thing of reducing the dev time (pulling) to bring the highlights in to a manageable area? Best regards, Charles Yes but typically it's still grainy because it's the increase in contrast that causes the grain rather than the overall brightness. If you use N-1 or N-2 the...

Re: B&W film and ND Grads?
If I knew I wanted to burn in a sky I think I might use a grad because otherwise you can get a lot more grain which might not be what you want (although it might).
I use grads on neg now and again even though it has even more dynamic range than B&W

Re: FS: Nikon T-ED* 600mm f/9 telephoto for up to 10x8
I will also be selling other 10x8 lenses soon (eg. Nikkor-SW 150/8 wide angle) and will update the list when I return. I can confirm that the 600mm is a great lens - it may not be as sharp as the Fuji C 600 but then again you can't use that on most 10x8 cameras. The price is good too.. I'd be inter...

Re: WTS Schneider Super-Symmar 110mm XL
Thanks Steve and Charlie, much appreciated. I'm not surprised that you use this most Steve, I did too. Then again switching to the Cooke opens up a whole host of creative possibilities. It took me a while to move to a 110, 80, 58mm XL lens set up at wider end from my original 120, 90 and 75mm (latt...
