Re: A question on focussing

Something similar to this is what I use. It's a bit of a pain if I have the screen light-screens up, but if I remove those and use a cover, it's fine. <edit> for got to put the link in! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3X6X-Magnifying-LED-Jewelry-Loupe-Magnifier-Credit-Card-/160616697934?_trksid=p4340.m263...

Re: A question on focussing

I'm farsighted and need glasses for anything nearer than a couple of feet; even with the glasses I find I can't see nearer than a foot or so. But at least that means positive lenses in loupes and such are the right direction for me. I use an 'old folks reading aid' - credit card sized thing with an ...

Re: St Alban's Cathedral

Yep, that's Sainsbury's cheapest own-brand coffee... film is Adox CHS-50. I'm still working on a good dilution/time and possibly restrainer to get the results I want from the sheet film, though I have it cracked now for the 35mm. There's some subtle difference in the film structure or the emulsion t...

I'm not one for religion, but it's a nice pile of stone.

Re: First Wet-plates

Interesting - I don't get the odd perspective flatness I had with the earlier image.

The method really brings out the texture of the stonework, but perhaps a touch over exposed? Anyone know the spectral sensitivity of the chemistry? I'm guessing UV/blue sensitive, rather than red.

Re: Scheimpflug and another question

At the risk of heresy - I can probably count on one hand the times I've ever chosen to use anything more than shifts to compose an image. There's a reason the vast majority of cameras in the world keep the lens parallel to the film... Let me give an example: Scheimpflug requires that the plane of th...

I find it must more satisfying to be doing something a bit off the beaten track... currently investigating, as I have been for a few weeks, developing Adox CHS-50 in coffee...

Re: The Most Important Photographer of the Late 20th Century

I think people may have taken my analogy the wrong way... All a cooker does is puts heat under a pan - the chef selects the ingredients, prepares them, knows the order and for how long to cook them. All a camera does is put an image on a light sensitive film at the back of a dark box. The label on t...

Re: Some thoughts on the design of a lightweight 4x5

A very kind offer, Susie - you may have access to better machining than I have! The issue with casting/moulding CF is that you need accurately made bucks to make the moulds, including a good surface finish, and that costs expensive machinist time... the good news is that many of the parts can be mad...

Re: Some thoughts on the design of a lightweight 4x5

Indeed; when I tried my proto made from aircraft grade birch ply and beech it's pretty good - but could be better! My Sanderson is also heavier than it feels, if that makes sense. Of course, most modern lenses are also a lot heavier than their vintage cousins. (Of which - I had a major shock discove...

Re: The Most Important Photographer of the Late 20th Century

It sounds like Neil isn't going to be buying much of Uta Barth's work then :) . Fair enough, and each to their own but, his recipe for a worthy seems to sadly discount the potential of photography to convey much, much more than a well composed facsimile of "reality". If the same rules were applied ...
