Archiving 5x7 film
Hello, Does anyone have any suggestions on how best to store 5x7 negs & trannies? I've used Printfile 45-4B for 5x4 but I can't seem to find the 5x7 equivalent in the UK. Pointers for a source would be helpful. I've thought of sleeves for postcard and banknote collectors, if it comes to it. Any othe...

Re: Carrying lenses
The PhotoBackPacker bag looks very similar if a little more pricey - as per usual with camera gear. @Dave: I have basically got a divided back-pack, but one of my own design. I pack a monorail like in the Couturier link I gave. That leaves a space between the standards, which is where I put the lens...

Re: Velvia 100F dynamic range confusion.
Once again the UK gets shafted by Fuji... I think their plan is to shut down as much as they can and centralise to reduce costs. If that means continued access to film, then I'm happy to order from Germany. Maco has Astia 100F: http://www.macodirect.de/fuji-astia-100f-sheet-filmbr102x127cm-4x520-she...

Carrying lenses
A while back, Emmanuel Bigler recommended we take a look at the bag design of Marcel Couturier who carried his lenses in a plyboard box with grooves routed in to it. I tried the method with my bag and found the slots introduced weak lines in the box. I didn't help by reducing the weight of the desig...

Re: Velvia 100F dynamic range confusion.
V100 is OK for strong, unreal colours whereas V100F is more natural and IMHO a good complement to V50 for the reasons you state. Astia 100F is a good choice for wider dynamic range.

Yes a bit cyan-y, but mainly in the darker parts: the skies look about right and wouldn't want to be that much more red or magenta. Good luck!

Weather? Plan B? I would be very disappointed, if Sean gave in to such trivial considerations.

Re: Some shots from Leonardslee
Hello Clive, Good shots. The 2nd works best for me - probably because you're within he film's dynamic range - and the third is a good composition but too dark for my tastes. For the 1st and 3rd shots, I'd question your choice of film. Neg film would have gotten a lot more colour and texture out of t...

Re: Adox CHS 50 film
Agree on that last comment - I use water rather than a stop and am far happier with the results.
It took me a while to work out how to get the film out of the bath without touching the emulsion; it's that fragile. But I like the look and it's cheap.
All the best,
Charles

Re: Still dreaming of 5x4
Thanks Charles. very useful! How much swing are we talking here? A small amount for a 90m lens - a couple degrees at most, I'd guess, maybe 5 in worst case. Depends how steep the hill is... :? Sometimes just a smidge away from the centre can make a world of difference at large apertures or with lar...

Re: Still dreaming of 5x4
Hello Jools, I appreciate your desire to close the thread but I've been out of the loop for a few days. A couple quick comments... What you will find though, is that unless you are after some fairly extreme images, you will need very little adjustment most of the time. If you are going to take photo...

Re: Lenses - how to choose them?
The 90mm f/8 lenses of the usual biogon-type design (super angulons etc) are in a similar sweet spot. Its about as short as you can go where its universally excepted you won't need a center filter for slide film (massive shifts notwithstanding), the F/8s aren't too big, you don't need an expensive ...

Re: Still dreaming of 5x4
I would definitely avoid Ebony at this stage. They're vastly over-priced. When you've had a go with several cameras and determined what you truly need, if that so happens to fit with Ebony's offering, go on, save up for your once-in-a-lifetime purchase. If you're like me, your needs'll change every ...

Re: Metering, what's gone wrong?
Hello Paul, Just to be clear: the Epson scanner doesn't darken the pic, but it struggles to render dark areas. And 1.5 stops under on V50 is about as dark as you would want to scan. Beyond that, you get all manner of noise. It's a great result, if you are achieving systematic errors. That's a doddle...

Re: Metering, what's gone wrong?
Hello Paul, I've been quite busy and have only just looked at this thread on my calibrated monitor. Are you sure you are that far out? OK the sky is definitely dark and that could be a mistake: you say the first thing I did was meter the highlights in the foreground and the sky, this indicated a .6 ...
