The Most Important Photographer of the Late 20th Century(?)
Ok, I'm stirring it up a little with the title but contemporary fine art photography gets little attention in this forum, and yet the large format camera is frequently used to produce works in this genre. At the moment (until September 16th 2011) there is a Thomas Struth retrospective at the Whitech...

Re: The possibilities for creating new forums on here
My personal feeling is that I prefer the forum with fewer categories. The reason for this is that we are quite a small forum and sometimes we go for a short while without much discussion. By spreading it out over sub-forums, we need to go clicking through more sections just to see if something intri...

Re: Lenses for 20" x 16" Camera.
I'd suggest that you probably don't need a shutter for wet plate (in the UK). They are handy and I quite like them but I don't think that John Brewer even owns a lens with a shutter. I believe that some Ronars can be unscrewed and fitted into a shutter with machined shims. The Klimsch Ronars have a ...

I'm sorry to say that I'm a little sad for those on here (including me) who have taken the time to reply to your post, that there's been (so far) no acknowledgement to the input posted for you................................? it's clear that you're around since you've just joined the Large Format P...

Re: Lenses for 20" x 16" Camera.
The thing to remember is that coverage for process lenses is usually specified for 1:1 reproduction so it would be a lot less at infinity. I am lazily planning a similar wet plate project. I expect that my 600mm f9 Ronar will probably cover that size (standard lens?). I am not sure about my 480mm f9...

Ilford do a direct positive paper so you could investigate shooting direct to that.Neil Barnes wrote:Hmmm. Can you do a develop-bleach-expose-develop-fix reversal with paper? I have vague memories of trying something along those lines, years ago, but I don't think it was terribly successful...

Re: Lots of questions
John Brewer is a great one-stop-shop for education, chemistry and silver boxes (even lenses at times). Most people seem to scan their plates before varnishing them as they scan better and there is a slight potential for the varnishing process to damage the plate. Making wet plate negatives is slight...

Re: A stupid Question
When the supply of film in 4x5 will fade, you could start making your own glass plates. Wet collodion seems to get a large revival these days. Georges is absolutely correct. With wet plate large format can not die out until the silver nitrate runs out :) Actually, wet plate could help it to flouris...

Hi Nigel.
I have a Sinar P and I live in Chorlton.
Hope you're getting on well with it
Drop me a line if you like. They are beautiful (but heavy) cameras.

Re: spot meters
In the UK a strobe is not normal a photographic electronic flash, it's a Stroboscope which is designed to flash repeatedly at intervals which can be varied to give flashes per second/minute etc I'm in Manchester, UK, but I did mean that I sometimes use the Sekonic L508 Zoom for checking shadow/high...

Re: spot meters
I use a couple. I use a Spiratone SP-II which is a 1 degree digital spot meter. This is really easy as you just press the trigger and scan the scene. The numbers change as you scan the scene so it is easy to determine where the darkest and the lightest areas are. You can see the values without remov...

This looks really interesting, Stephen.
Great concept backed by arresting images.
I read that it is a traveling exhibition. I hoe it travels to the North West.

Re: Petzval double take
I hadn't noticed that it was only the bottom part of the image that was ghosted but the nature of that ghosted part is commensurate with my experiences of a rocking tripod. From the image I can't see whether the ghosting gets bigger the further down the film you get or whether the amplitude of it re...

Re: Petzval double take
Looks like tripod wobble (forward and back) to me. I'm guessing that you're shuttering vertically and knocking the lens which is making it shake. I've done this on Petzvals before. I usually shoot wet plate with mine so I don't tend to have exposure times less than 3 seconds which makes things easie...
