Re: Frozen negatives

Extraordinary. I wonder what size the negs were. One of the pics looks as if it might have been 10 x 8.

Try Mike Walker, www.walkercameras.com. He's based near Chester, on the welsh corner of the Wirral peninsula.

Re: Mobile broadband.

Dennis I have used Vodafone sims in my laptop and now my iPad no problem. 3G works well when it's available. Unfortunately major photogenic areas remain poorly connected or not at all, such as the Lake District. GPRS in Keswick can be extremely slow.

Emmanuel, many thanks indeed for posting this which is a superb programme. And accessible for us Brits—the trail from N/NE towards SW France has been covered many times. I hope that some will come from the UK. Unfortunately it will not be possible for me to be in France that week. I would have atten...

Re: Process or camera fault?

OK, if the film never leaves the cassette… In any event the camera needs a bit of attention, and it may not be expensive to fix.

Re: Process or camera fault?

Dennis, are you sure about the shutter? Light is not getting through. May be worth a phone call to somewhere like Newton Ellis in Liverpool.

Re: Process or camera fault?

Ah, the blank film problem! I'm not party to the previous discussion you refer to but your inference seems to be correct. In general, blank film with edge marks present equals camera problem (eg lens cap on), totally blank film equals processing error (eg fixer and developer swapped).

Tristan, it might be worth asking Mike Walker if he's any or knows of any that are available (I take it you mean second-hand).

Re: 5x7 film holder confusion

Threads like this make me smile. How different it must have been years ago, from today's relentless drive towards uniformity and standardization! There was another size labelled "half-plate", dimensions 4.5 x 5.5 inches. Has anyone had experience of this size?

Re: National Portrait Gallery

I agree with Clive that long lenses may do the job for you. Without more info about this portrait it's difficult to say much more—was it a head and shoulders job, or did you see more of the subject? Was the name of the photographer available? Who was the scientist, and when was the photograph taken?...

Charles, would an old blanket have the sort of texture you're looking for? I'm sure that there are people who would be happy to donate them for the project, now that duvets are the rule.

Re: Myth busting

Charles, I suspect that people may remember school photographs etc. when LF cameras were the norm. The photographer would keep the dark cloth over the camera while he fired the shutter. I think I read that ?Ansel advised this to avoid light leaks when removing and inserting the dark slide. Leaky dar...
