A further update. I have to say that even with limited movements, a traditional whole plate camera is a big lump of fun. Looking at that big view screen and focusing hardly needing a loup, it's relatively easy to compose. I am, though, going to have to improve my hit rate ... this was #3 out of four...

Someone once quipped that in painting you add while in photography you subtract . No idea of the source of that one, but I imagine the subtraction and exclusion of the irrelevant is part of what you both mean by filtering. Is that idea rooted exclusively in traditional modernism? My guess is that I ...

Almost, Rob? The camera is now almost in all its constituent parts spread out on a makeshift table. The bellows are flattening under bricks at present. I'll be making a fresh set. It's not too difficult dealing with large bellows. Shutters? I wish. The lenses I currently have for this one are both p...

Any three-way discussion is bound to be fraught with danger, but the directions that this discussion has taken are interesting (to say the least!) But it is now so wide ranging I can only pick up a few points here and there - inevitably the ones that concern me most. I've been wondering how to addre...

Hello Rob. Thanks for your input. At some point the original back was replaced with a later wooden Kodak springback of the same fit. No problem on that account, fortunately. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a119/Sandeha/large_format/th_IMGP3848_copy.jpg Perhaps this was added at the same time that ...

Mothballs and Lavender
That's the smell of my new camera. It reminds me of some great grandma's bedroom cupboards - lace and old leather. A scent I haven't come across since I was a kid. It's a whole plate brass and mahogany double draw folder, with front rise and fall, front tilt both ways, rear tilt both ways and rear s...

Hi. I remember once writing "composition is rhythm" , but I'm not trying to suggest that rhythm and composition are wholly interchangeable terms - rather using rhythm to explain composition. I find rhythm as evident in the first shot as in the second while, if I understand you correctly, you are say...

Have you tried http://www.the-darkroom.co.uk/index2.html
I use them for any colour (except C41 in 4x5 which they no longer do).
