Re: Old lens and shutter - any use ?
Thanks Andrew, indeed I have a new 10x8 to play with. Its really rather nice, not as heavy as I thought and the 158mm lens is very nice. I have a 300mm Nikkor which covers 10x8 so that is all I will need. The bag bellows are quite compact and will accomodate the 300mm by the looks of things. thanks...

Re: Old lens and shutter - any use ?
Dave the C&G lens is as you've said an f7 with all elements in place, it's very unlikely that it will cover 10 x 8, however if you test each element solely, then you may well find that either or both of them, could well cover 10 x 8 absolutely no reason at all why it shouldn't be tried on 4 x 5, alt...

Re: Petzval character
........exactly
one lens, that will do the job on 10 x 8 and which has a 24" fl, is the Dallmeyer 6D, with a speed of f6, it's not cheap at all, stated coverage is 12 x 15, I couldn't envisage ever using mine, so I cashed the chips in

yes, probably one of the better known examples of a f3 is the much vaunted Dallmeyer 3B, which from memory isn't 'overly swirly', although there's plenty of examples of it's work available on the web

Re: Petzval character
thanks Marizu yes, they certainly do swirl in the extremities of the coverage apart from the current interest in wet plate work, which has surely pushed up the prices of 'proj petzvals', people seem to be very taken with 'the Aero Ektar swirly look' and as decent 'AE' lenses go for pretty high price...

I'm guessing that both the portrait of your niece and the guy on the boat were taken in Australia?
UK girls rarely have that appearance and well, boats are different over there too..............

Re: Models for LF portraiture
[quote="Charles Twist"]Thanks, George. Very kind of you - I am flattered. And relieved as it required 6 sheets of film to get one good one. Re Petzvals and swirling: Andrew and others, do you reckon a projection lens would swirl in the centre of the image, behind the focussed subject? I know my lens...

Re: Models for LF portraiture
I knew you'd come up with the goods guys, thanks. Charles, thanks again for sharing your images, I wondered if the less-controlled environment of the dairy milking room made the farmer image a particular challenge - I do like it. Thanks Paul for the short film, very instructive And Andrew, thanks f...

Re: WTB lenses for 5x7
Me again. I must say this idea of a copal 3 mounted to the front of old lenses sounds cool. I'm thinking about some lovely swirly bokeh! The next challenge would be finding someone to drill the boards...! I guess this is straightforward. Gareth 'your bog standard' f8 Rapid Rectilinear, does not and...

good stuff, as per usual
if the Sinar Shutter is used, then because of the size of the Canham boards and the general configuration around the front standard (of that Camera), this type of shutter could only be front mounted to a lens
