Re: dynamic range of ektar and portra 160 - test results
Thanks for sharing these informative tests and comparisons, Tristan. To answer your question, I've not used either of these films yet. However, as I burn through my remaining Velvia 50 stock, I will be there fairly soon I suspect.

Re: Fuji film
I also saw an article a few weeks back that stated Fuji was to cease production of it's Movie film entirely by March of 2013. Another film loss, sadly....

Re: Is this industry really worth it?
Jools, I think the previous comments go a long way to bringing out some of the high points with regard to much of the drop off in work being sold or the number of folks actually turning a decent income from it. Additionally, one has got to either be diverse and do many things in the field, or have a...

Re: Velvia discontinuation
The loss of ANY film products cannot be a good thing especially from Fuji. It was only a year or so back I saw a U-tube video on the quality between film and digital movie usage. Film won on all tests.

Re: Which Dark Cloth?
I've used a variety of over the counter units and found fault with most for one reason or another. However, on one of my many trips to Death Valley NP years ago I met a group of fine LF shooters from the UK. They all had made their own out of light weight material, white outside and black inside sew...

Re: Velvia discontinuation
I'd not heard about any other issues beyond the Fuji scuffle as of late. Sadly, it looks like the economic health of remaining film producers no matter what size or flavor are in a justification struggle throughout. It's hard to figure at times when all of a sudden there is a new product released th...

Re: Velvia discontinuation
Wow, that wet plate process looked a bit over the top for me...... I flunked basic chem class too. Although I do have a full-on painter's breathing apparatus for the dark room...... The second U-tube was a bit easier to take in, I already have a saw-horse or I guess you could call it a "qu...

Re: Velvia discontinuation
In checking the Kodak site there is no notice with respect to the Porta or Ektar negative films being discontinued. As these were fairly later products they released I suspect they will remain viable as long as Kodak does. I would think as time goes by and if Fuji continues down it's path with respe...

Re: Velvia discontinuation
I checked B&H this morning to see if the new 20% price increase had taken place here in the USA as we were warned about a week or so back. Regretfully B&H shows V-50 discontinued in 4x5. I just bought 10 boxes there last week under the old price. However, I did notice for the first time ever in buyi...

Re: Velvia discontinuation
Well stated Charles in all respects. I for one have only shot slide film since the late 60's. The usual route most have taken with film in upgrades, 35mm - 120 - 4x5. In the 120 and 4x5 usage all have been V-50. The ability to see a positive on a light table and determine almost immediately if it's ...

Ian, As the on-line petition approaches the 1k signature mark today one can at least feel good about the positive effort applied in a world-wide fashion. I saw several folks I contacted from various sites I visit on a regular basis on the signature list too. Although it was good to see the represent...

Re: Friday 13th from HELL!!!!!
As in many cases with the film products there seems to be a lot of confusion and hard to get real or total information on the subject. After reading this thread and the article in BJP linked here I had immediate concerns on the proposed demise of the V-50 in 4x5 size. That is my primary usage and ha...

Re: Velvia 100F dynamic range confusion.
I've noticed quite regularly that overexposed blues in velvia go cyanic (rather unpleasant in my opinion) and so I always try to limit any blues to +1 at the brightest. Excellent point, Tim. I've had the same results with V-50. With that said I use soft grads almost all the time when the sky is inc...

Re: Comparison of an image from the Maldon workshop
Not sure about the total varying factors here and also not taking a hard line either way, however, I prefer the darker scene overall. I find I use my grads on almost ever shot that includes the sky. I use V-50 and find that my exposure for a good flatbed scanning image loses a lot of sky color and t...
