Clevedon Pier
The only fully intact grade 1 listed pier (apparently), and a lot closer than Whitby.

Thanks JC, and thanks for the help and encouragement. I've been reading Merklinger's stuff on focusing and depth of field, so the next ones should be even better ;-) I really don't really understand why anyone needs all that fancy Ebony asymmetric focusing now, when all you really need is a protract...

Thank you Alan. Actually the second one was f22@ 1/100s and the first f22@ 1/50s. I shot 3 bracketed images, because although Ansel once said to me "Patrick, why waste two bits of film on the wrong exposure?", I didn't want to put all my eggs in one basket ;-) But then Ansel never tried developing h...

More B&W blunderings
Further to my recent 'learning' experiences with shooting and developing LF B&W, I've been trying to put some of the lessons into practice. By now you'll all be fed up with hay bales, and they're pretty much all in the barns now, so here's my go at a field of Barley. http://www.yatecourtbarn.adsl24....

OK, I have shot a couple more negs and processed in DD-X as per JC's numbers. As you all so like hay bales, I thought I'd concentrate on those. One neg, that I thought was underexposed and looks very, very thin, actually seems to scan OK, and with a bit of masking and separate curves for f/g and sky ...

??? I think that's what I said :? In the Jobo ATL 1500 processor, I not only have (very strong) continuous agitation to cope with, I also have to develop B&W at 24°. So, my time dilution ends up being 7'30" with 1+9. In the Orbital, your "agitation" has to be relatively slow to avoid slopping chemi...

Because the Orbital idea of continuous agitation is nowhere near as aggressive as that which a Jobo processor can inflict on film, I would tend to use the DD-X at a dilution of 1+6 instead of the recommended 1+4 for a time of 8'30" at 20°C. I have learnt to increase the dilution with DD-X rather th...

Joanna, many thanks for being so generous with your time and expertise - the bad news is that I'm going to send you all my negs from now on ;-) Yes, the three shots were all taken on 14 June at around 20:30 and that one is pointing about 300degs - so a northerly sky. I didn't have any ND grads at th...

I have scanned flat using colour transparency settings and converted to mono in gimp. I've then applied a truly horrible looking curve to get this: http://www.yatecourtbarn.adsl24.co.uk/images/M090603Z-005-small.jpg so I shall put it in the post and see what someone who knows what they're doing can ...

I don't bother using layers in gimp, I just apply the curve to the image and save it as a new file. And this is where you get your noise from. Adjusting the original layer is "destructive", which means that you can't readjust what you've already done without doing more "damage". Well yes you can, b...
