Practice Project!!

The test project has now closed. We have collected 13 pictures (lucky for some) from 11 participants. Results can be seen here: http://www.lf-photo.org.uk/projects/project2007_1.htm So whaddyathink Gari, or anybody else for that matter?

Hi Charles , an interesting collection of photos. Couple of shots that I like.Pity about the small response tho.
On a personal level it was good to try something a little different from what I normally shoot , and with unfamilier equipment. It was refreshing and stimulating to come up with an idea, and finally exucute what I had planned.( not really pleased with the final outcome!)
It would be good if other people were to give their views/opinions on the final selections.

I think they are a great set of prints Charles. The 'Doc Martins' are my favorite, but they are all interesting.

Unfortunately I do not have a scanner at this time, otherwise I would have entered something.

Sadly, being in the middle of a 5 week jaunt around the USA leaves me a little short on scanning and processing ability. I would have liked to have entered, but preparing for this trip ( not to mention getting made redundant just before I left ) swallowed up every available second.

The posted shots are very nice though. Being a landscaper, I particularly liked Joanna's lighthouse shot, where everything seems to have come together just right, perfect light, perfect weather, lovely composition, it all works.

I'm a Caterpillar man myself ... but the DM shot does shine.

It was an excellent project starter, I think, and one way to gather views and viewpoints together. No doubt there are limits to the hosting of images on this site, but even at this size they look good together.

Perhaps we need another 'shortie' to tide us over the next few months.

I agree that another short project would be useful, don't forget that the winter leg of the four seasons is due to end soon, this would effectivly be a shortie due to the time left.

Anyone have a subject suggestion for another?

I would like to thank all those that contributed images for the ICONS project. Still thinking about what to do with the images, a little difficult as there are so few. I am open to suggestions.

Maybe we could combine with the next leg, a connected subject perhaps.

I think that the special thing about us is the fact we are LF and for the most part VC as well (view camera). The LF bit gives us plenty of detail; the VC bit gives us striking compositions. Most of the pics on the projects list demonstrate at least one of these qualities, even though the LF advantage is partially diminished in the transition to website images.
Personally I much prefer the shots where VC comes in. I find composition/ shape far more striking than resolution, which I tend to notice secondarily (it helps to sell the pic but is not the main selling point). So the Scottish pics and the Perch Rock pic are particular to us and noticeably so. The architectural pics (Angel, Llangiwg church and Perch Rock) are also particular but in a less striking way.
Our interpretation and representation of these subjects is influenced by the technology upheld by this forum/ website. What would be interesting for a second project, would be to turn this on its head in some way, putting the technology first, choosing a subject that only LF/VC can handle. I am not sure what that would be. Maybe something like "Unusual planes of focus". That would give us the chance to play with large apertures or macros. Just an idea.

I, for one, would think that is a superb topic; unfortunately, Andrew and myself may have to exclude our previous shots like the gas lamp at the Victoria Baths though

I think that would be highly appropriate. Although small apertures and 'positive' tilts have always been foremost in LF landscapes and architecture, offset planes of focus and wide aps are intriguing in portrait and still life/product work. I'd be quite happy with that for a project.

And, separately perhaps, macros ... for a third quarter project?

Ah, but I have another one with it sharper - more traditional that you haven't seen and if I reversed the first one, I just need a third for a triptych...
