I was toning them after being fixed and dryed! I'm told now that I should do it while they are still wet but what would you recommend?

Haven't really done any since, waiting for the nice weather and some nice 10x8 negs.

I'd tone before fix. Make sure you rinse well in distilled water before toning and before fixing. The book you have is very dated and also has several errors. Google Christopher James and have a look at his book.
