Dear All

I've recently purchased a secondhand, but pristine condition, Linhof Technika LF camera. I've noticed that, at all distances, the rangefinder focussing does not correlate to that on on the GG screen, ie both are slightly out. It's out by the slightest turn of the focussing ring and I guess it could be overcome at longer distances by stopping down, as I'm checking the focussing on the GG at maximum aperture. The lens is cammed for that body and as far as I can tell I'm doing everything correctly - pulling the lens rail out until it clicks, pulling the lens to the infinity stop, no movements applied when focussing on the GG etc. As I'm keen to do some LF portraiture with it, I need the focussing to be accurate. Does anyone have any suggestions or is the focussing within the tolerances one should expect? I'm reasonably familiar with LF kit, but the camera and its ranger finder system is new to me.

Many thanks in advance, it's much appreciated.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Do you know which model camera you have? From the ST V the lenses were matched to the cams at the factory: the cameras did not have to go in for matching. but the infinity stops on the rails have to be matched to the lens.

The easiest test is to set the camera up looking at a distant object ( a specular reflection is ideal) and see if that is in focus at infinity. If not, then it could well be the positioning of the stops. If you have a Tech 111 then rather than flip up stops, there are just dimples in the rail, which will call for shimming.

When set up, the rangefinder focussing is spot on.
