Hi folks

I have been playing with the Jabber instant messaging service. This provides two services:
  1. You can elect to be notified of replies to your messages via Jabber
  2. You can converse with me (as board admin) or other users, who also have a Jabber account, via text, audio or even video chat.
All you need is to sign up for a free account at http://www.jabber.org.uk and use a suitable client program (I use Apple's iChat)

When you have got your Jabber account, simply change the notification settings on the Board Preferences page of your User Control Panel to receive notifications of replies to your messages.

If you want to advertise that you can be contacted via Jabber, just add your Jabber address to the Profile page of your User Control Panel.

Of course, being total Luddites, what with our interest in "old" technology, I don't know if this will be of too much interest but it can be useful if you need to discuss a problem with someon more expert, without spending a fortune on phone calls.

For those who have Mac computers, you can even use the screen sharing facilities to (get) help with programs like Photoshop

And if you are happy with that, then don't worry, Jabber is not for you.

On the other hand, there are folks who use Jabber for instant messaging, audio and video chatting. For such people who have a Jabber client already running, such notifications can be useful.

The other purpose behind Jabber is to be able to help each other out, with stuff like Photoshop, by screen sharing, which is also possible via Jabber.
