BJP
I browsed AP in the newsagent's this morning. A most bizarre paragraph caught my eye. Editor Damien Demolder writes: "In photography we have national institutions too, and the British Journal of Photography is one of them. I should be delighted that AP will soon be the only weekly photographic magazine in the world, but somehow it makes me very sad indeed."
Anyone heard or can confirm this one?

Re: BJP
Nothing on the website...
I have mixed feelings about this, I enjoy BJP and think it's one of the few mags worth reading, but then I don't buy it every week because there's often not enough in it to justify the weekly expense. On the one hand going monthly will make for a larger magazine with much more of the excellent editorial and photos, and an easily justifiable purchase, on the other you lose the weekly updates and up to the minute news and exhibition info.
I stopped reading AP for similar reasons some years ago but BJP still caught my eye every time I was in the newsagents, BJP is more about the photos and less about the gear, and not 60% adverts like AP seems to be.
Bauer Media on the other hand... can get stuffed, I'll not buy any of their mags now after seeing their latest rights grabbing trick. They basically enforced a contract on all freelance photographers stating that all submissions automatically transfer full copyright title to Bauer Media irrevocably.

I have just received the following reply from the BJP's editor.
I should get my copy by the end of the week. If someone else doesn't post the info first, I will post an update when I receive my copy.Hi Steve,
We will have more details in Wednesday’s edition, and the new look magazine will come out on 03 March.
I do hope you like the look of it.

Re: BJP
I let my subscription lapse after nearly 35 year5s last Summer, postage to Turkey is too expensive and reading approx 6 months worth of copies on my trips home is much to tedious.
However if it goes monthly I'll re-subscribe.

Re: BJP
Hello DJ,
As I understand it, Bauer media don't own any of the mags mentioned here. Or is there something I don't know about?
Regards,
Charles

No they don't, it was a tenuous linkCharles Twist wrote:As I understand it, Bauer media don't own any of the mags mentioned here. Or is there something I don't know about?

The information on Bauer Media's recent wickedness was just reported on the BJP site and I was reminded of it when I went to check on news of the move to monthlies. If anyone is interested the story is :

Re: BJP
Ref the piece in BJP on Bauer Media, surely it has always been the case with commissioned work that the copyright goes to the commissioner, while the trannies, or whatever stay with the photographer? dennis
Re: BJP
BJP have posted up about the move to monthlies, looks interesting :

RE: Bauer, I think the cause of the furor is that the new contract means the photographer has to relinquish all rights, of any kind.

Re: BJP
They also have an interesting article on the Digital Economy Bill [HL] currently awaiting its 3rd reading in the House of Lords (the chamber it was introduced in) before it is sent over to the Commons. It is controversial as there have been fears that it could allow businesses, etc to, in effect, legally expropriate the digital copyright of orphan, or alledgedly orphan, images. More details below.

Re: BJP
I received my first copy of the new monthly format BJP yesterday. I really like it. The quality of the photographic reproduction is vastly better than in the weekly BJP and I like its more in-depth focus on photographers' work. I will use their online site for getting the latest news on photographic issues, most notably updates on the notorious Digital Economy Bill [HL].
