Hi
Just been trawling through the forum archives and it looks like the Epson V700 is the ideal but my budget is limited to a maximum of £200 so an old 4870 or, if I was lucky 4990, seem to be the only options. Is there anything else out there that I should be aware of eg. microtek? Or should I just become totally obsessed with hunting down an epson?
Regards
Adrian

Re: Budget 5x4 scanners?
The best thing you can do is be patient, good deals do come up. Earlier this year I managed to drop on a 4990 for a ton fifty, and that was from a dealer with 6 month warranty. Just have to keep your eyes peeled for long enough.

Re: Budget 5x4 scanners?
Hi Dave (and Tristan)
You've got to be quick on this forum, was just thinking of replying to Tristan's offer of a Polaroid Sprintscan and now the post has vanished! Ho hum. Hope you found a good home for it Tristan.
I think I will go with your advice Dave and hold out for 4990, V700 and hope I get lucky, unless anyone can recommend another affordable scanner that will do the job with a similar Dmax and resolution. I am guessing that Epson developed the technology to its ultimate point for this level of pro/amateur scanner market and wiped out the competition.
Regards

Re: Budget 5x4 scanners?
Hi Adrian
I removed the message because I am starting to think it is actually worth holding onto the scanner. I looked at some transparency scans and they are good scans so I may find use for it yet. Still if you wanted it and are willing to pick it up it is still available. It's a good scanner for transparencies - just definitely not on colour negatives.
Cheers,
Tristan

Re: Budget 5x4 scanners?
Hi Tristan
No worries. My problem is that my budget is limited to a £200 Christmas and Birthday present. If I split the fund then sods law says that a bargain 4990, V700 will come along ( I know, too much detail). If you still want to sell the Sprintscan in February and I still have a job, I'll get back to you. It sounds like a useful bit of kit, but I need something reliable to keep me going through hard times.
I guess you've tried the Hi-end scanner group for a Howtek drum.
