Epson V700 scanner - first impressions

My Canon D2400 scanner gave up the ghost earlier this week, so on Wednesday I ordered an Epson V700 from DABS. It arrived yesterday afternoon.
First impressions are of good build quality, very good film holders and excellent scan quality. So far, I have only scanned a print and a 6x4.5 B&W neg. The negative scan was at 1200dpi, giving an 8x6 print. The results are very good indeed. I managed to produce a print that I would have been very happy with had I made it in in the darkroom (which is currently off-line as we're having a new kitchen fitted)

I think I'm going to like this baby...thoughts of colour film and especially panoramics (If I get a suitable film back) are beginning to form...

Hi Mark,
I have also recently just got the V700 and really pleased with the scan. I scan my negs at 2400dpi and got some really nice 20x16 prints which are hanging now in a gallery. So far positive comments from people who have seen the prints, so I am well pleased. Would be better if someone actually bought them though.

Hmm - a 5x4 neg or trannie at 2400 dpi is a B I G file! I've not tried 5x4 yet - too busy printing some digital shots for our club's forthcoming portfolio competition. Maybe later...

Hope someone buys your work soon Chong. It's a real buzz when someone values your work isn't it?

How does it compare to an analogue print? I have read that the ability to capture shadow detail can be a bit lacking.

Steve, it seems OK. But having said that, I have only had time to make two or three prints.
One mono print is very good indeed. I'll have to do some more trials and let you know...
It will depend on whether you're scanning negs or trannies (obviously!)

Well, I scanned a B&W neg that had been underexposed by, at least, 4 stops and it found plenty of shadow detail. Although trannies are another thing; if the dynamic range of the film is small, then I doiubt any scanner will pull up that kind of detail.
