Images from Norway & Spitsbergen

Post by Thingy » Mon Aug 17, 2009 1:37 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Last month I went on a two week cruise to Norway and Spitsbergen taking my Ebony 45SU along with me and a selection of Fuji QL sheet film plus some rolls of film to use with my Horseman 6x12 roll film holder. I had expected to mainly use 6x12 and perhaps a dozen 4x5 images. In the event I returned with 4 medium format 6x12 images and used 35 sheets of QL: Acros, Pro 160S, Velvia 50 and 100!

The film came back from Liverpool last week and I'm impressed with the results - it has also converted me to using Velvia 50 sheet film more often!

As I have yet to purchase a scanner (I'm still in the process of "moving back in" after having my home re-underpinned, this will have to wait to next Spring) the images are only on the film. I took some shots that were essentially the same using the different films plus a few more to compare Velvias 50 & 100 after promising on this forum, to make some images which I hope Tim Parkin will assess for the forum at a later date.

Most of the images were taken on dry land but I also tried out doing some on the moving ship using the bulkheads of my cabin's balcony as a giant lens shade. There was no fancy tilts as the key was the ability to compose the images quickly and make the image as quickly as possible. The results look much better than expected, though I will only know how well they have worked after scanning and upon closer inspection of the images. I used a faster shutter speed. These were necessitated by the fact that some of the most interesting landscapes are only viewable afloat, especially the ice floats arising from glacier breakup upon reaching the sea. Once scanned I will post some of the images on this site. The others I will take to the next UKLFPG meeting we have that I am able to get to (having used up all my remaining annual leave for this year, for the Spitsbergen trip. )
Love is an Ebony mounted with a Cooke PS945.......
