+ import duty. The B&H delivery calculator works this out for you however but it's about 30% total I think (15% vat for the next two days?)Patrick Dixon wrote:Yes that's it. You will also pay 17.5% VAT on the total cost plus a processing fee to Parcelforce for importing it.

The formula for working out import costs is as follows:timparkin wrote:+ import duty. The B&H delivery calculator works this out for you however but it's about 30% total I think (15% vat for the next two days?)
1. Import duty on goods - usually around 6.5%
2. VAT on (goods + import duty + carriage costs)
3. "Collection charge" by carrier - Parcel Force seem to be the cheapest at around £8 or £10.
The trick to beating the VAT increase is to speak to Doug and make sure that the Invoice date (tax point) is set for before the 1/1/2010, even if the goods will not be delivered before the New Year.

Thanks for the VAT tips as well, I've been wondering how I would fare with a purchase completed in December yet arriving in the UK in January, I guessed the customs would sting me on the arrival of the parcel in this country.

I have never been asked to pay import duty on a personal import, only VAT and the processing fee.

Everything I have bought in the past from the US has been under the threshold and have been simply dropped through my letterbox labeled 'gift'
