As an interesting side-note, I spoke today with a man from Harman/Ilford, regrettably I never got his name but I believe he's the sales/marketing director. Thoroughly nice bloke and very open about the market etc and I very much enjoyed chatting with him. I mentioned this thread to him and asked him his opinions on the state of the market for chemicals for B&W processing and he said they'd actually seen a rise in sales in 2009, this has to be good news. He said about 80% of their market were educational institutions like colleges who are teaching darkroom work on courses etc. Just thought you may be interested.
