Velvia 50 Discontinuation rumours

I have just been on the phone to Robert White, who have stopped selling Velvia 50 Quickload, apparently Fuji UK are also going to stop importing Velvia 50, as it is going out of date, due the minumum order required to import from Fuji Japan.

Things don't look promising for 5x4, initial Kodak pulled out, followed by Fuji withdrawing Astia,Acros and now Velvia.

So Fuji UK stopping importing it, rather than Fuji discontinuing it then? If it came to that you'd still be able to order it from japan/europe/elsewhere then. Not quite the end of the world. Could be a great time to stock up on out of date stuff from fuji UK!

I saw the same thread in the US site first so here is what I said there :

I have just been on the phone to Fuji UK and gather that Robert White have got the story a little mixed up. All available UK stock of Velvia 50 (short dated) has been shipped to Fuji UK's online store and, in about 4 months, fresh stock will be imported.

Join in with the thread on this forum about a bulk purchase of QL film from the US, it was initially about Astia but, if we can put together an order for 20 boxes of any films, the cost can be comparable to over here, even with shipping and taxes.

The main problem with slow sales of the new Velvia 50 could well be that, when Fuji withdrew the original emulsion many people started hording vast amounts in freezers and, my guess is, they already have a few years worth of old emulsion left to use.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head there. I have about 300 sheets of old RVP50 stashed in the freezer, which at the rate I shoot should last me years... I've never yet tried the new one.

From what you have heard, is this definitely just some confusion on Fuji UK's part as I've just bought 4 boxes of Acros QL and I don't want to have to get a loan out and buy a fridge for Velvia QL?

:-(

Well, the confusion seemed to be with Robert White but it is annoying that Fuji UK seems to have this weird arrangement where they can only import enormous amounts a fil, then let it all go out of date rather than doing what Ilford do and taking special orders a couple of times a year.
