[OTT?] Old computers

Post by dennis » Tue Jul 28, 2009 10:51 am Etc/GMT-1+01:00

I have an old Mac LC11 + 14" Apple Sony monitor + keyboard & mouse; all working correctly except for the battery so it has to to be set for date & time each it is booted up. Some manuals & programmes, notably Personal Press which we used to publish a bi-monthly mag for 3 years. Question: does it have any value, or where does one dispose of such gear? Sensible suggestions welcomed. Thanks. Dennis.

There's various charities that deal with old machines. Oxfam etc, I'm sure any of those will take it off your hands.

Make sure you wipe (and propery wipe, not just delete) any personal info/bank/creditcard details off before you ditch it.

Unfortunately most charities do not accept electrical equipment any more, health & safety, fear of being sued if it electrocutes someone etc. Last year I had a clear out of 3 old Macs with 21' monitors (I run my own design agency) and ended up taking it all to the dump where it could be disposed of responsibly. You might have more luck trying to flog it on ebay as there will always be someone willing to buy it at a knock down price. You never know it might be a collectors item! I still have an A3 dye sublimation printer sitting in the office that I have not the heart to take to the council tip... it cost me £15,000 when I bought it new!

Is it outclassed these days, or just too expensive to run?

The image quality was superb! equal to todays inkjet printers. Unfortunately I don't think you can buy the transfer rolls any more, and when you could they were sooo expensive, £700 each with a pack of A3 paper an additional £200. And people today complain about the price of inkjet ink!

Shame.

I saw an 'Imagine' the other week on William Eggleston, and he apparently used dye sublimation to print his colour photos. Even on the TV screen the quality looked impressive.

Thanks to all repliers. I'll check with local charities, o/w it will be the dump since I cannot face the hassle of ebay. Dennis.

I think Ctein might be the last person around to offer the dye-transfer process for clients.

Back on topic Dennis, I would place an advert in your local Free-Ads paper, I`m sure someone will take off your hands if it`s free.

Dennis,

Offer it on your local Freecycle group http://freecycle.org/group/UK/ Computers of any kind seem to go in a flash.
