Clueless : Where do you buy your film ?

Post by buze » Wed Aug 30, 2006 9:27 am Etc/GMT-1+01:00

For 120 I regularly pillage Guernsey (7dayshop) since they have prices regularily 50% cheaper than anywhere else...
But their selection of sheet film seems a bit on the light side (Velvia, Provia, Tri-X... all in small (10, 25) boxes...) so I wonder where do you guy get your film, and why...

I discovered they don't make Provia 400F in 4x5, thats very disapointing, that film is nothing short of amazing !

I usually raid Robert White on Special Film Offers... :)

Some manufacturers do a little discount at the workshops for the participants.
And I do pick up slightly out of date film from places like Calumet or PFD on occasion, which is generally well stored.
At Focus, any suppliers also give a reasonable discount, which usually is worth the entry price alone.

Silverprint and Retro have good prices for the sligtly more non standard films that are around (Efke, MACO, etc.), which some people seem to like a lot.

If you want 120,220 or 135 film, there is no better place than Mather's in Bolton. Great prices, low postage cost and a great service. Best to buy in packs of 10.

Ordered myself some chinese film of ebay; £14 (shipped) for 48 sheets -- that will allow me to ruin a few without cringing at wasting Ilford and such. I need something to practice with! :D

I bit the bullet and have used Ilford since starting to use LF. It's a bit more expensive but at least I have the consistency and availability needed to learn the characteristics of a particular film. I've used outdated film and paper before now but I couldn't work out if problems were down to me or the media.

For 35mm and 120mm I have to agree that Mathers can't be beaten and for sheet film I use either Silverprint or Nova depending on what else I need to order at that time.

I have bought 4x5 film and chemicals from Morco, called in when passing on the M1, and it breaks the journey. I mainly buy from eBay. There used to be someone selling FP4+ and HP5+, 5 boxes all in date to 2007, I ended up paying around £43 for 125 sheets. I 've also bought slightly outdated Fuji Acros Quickloads off eBay, and more recently a 50 sheet box of Velvia 50 slightly outdated, and some Tmax 100, a 50 sheet box well in date for a good price. I buy at a good price even if I'm well stocked up, then freeze it. I just keep the boxes I'm using in the film fridge. My wife sometimes kicks up over all the green boxes and silver packets 'taking over' the freezer.

Various ... cheap out-a-date film from occasional sellers on eBay when possible.

Recently bought some 4x5 Shantou Era 100 film from an eBay seller in Taiwan ... looks quite nice in Rodinal, and at around 40p a sheet I'm not complaining.

Next that I'll probably try is http://www.renedecaluwe.nl/ for Forte 5x7 ... looks like it will work out much cheaper than Retrophotographic's Wephota NP. (Postal rates  )

Ahh, now that would be telling!!!!!!!!!
Actually, lately, nothing much as it happens. Got a chum sorting a film holder so i don't have to use 14 elastic bands and 3 miles of gaffer tape to keep the thing in place when i use it.
When i do, it's some ADOX 400 - too fast with no proper shutter - or old glass plates. R25 ilford 5x4 taped in place and various older 9x12s plates. have about 150 in total :-)
Lovely images above BTW. Really nice to see B&W here.

To my amazement, the film arrived this morning from China... I've seen UK->UK postage taking longer than that !
