Finally gone and done it!

Post by PAUL O » Sat Oct 31, 2009 10:33 am Etc/GMT-1+01:00

... got myself a printer

Yes after what seems like a lifetime of deliberation I have finally purchased a "proper" printer! Took delivery of an Epson 3800 yesterday along with a Spyder 3 monitor calibration thingummyjig!!

After a couple of hours or 3 finally got it sorted out - a hard copy of a manual would have been nice!

Anyway, had a comparison "test" lined up - same b&w negative on 5x4 in the following versions; traditional wet print, a (superb) print made by Joanna on her 2400 versus ... whatever I could get out of the 3800!!

Since seeing Jo's prints from my negs I've long reckoned that a good inkjet is "better" than anything I could traditionally print so .... MAN ALIVE AND HOLY SMOKE!!!!!! This printer is amazing!!!!!!!

Didn't have a clue, just bits I'd read here and there, used Ilford Gold Fibre Silk and ABW mode and am I impressed??????

Just wanted to share my eureka moment with you! Same feeling watching the print chug out of the printer as watching one soup in a tray of developer.

Hi Paul - great stuff - Ive had one for over a year - just emptying the 1st few cartridges now - its the proverbial Mutts. I must admit the odd few B&W shots I do, I often do as RGB colour rather than ABW.. Welcome to the digital world of special recipes for unsharp masking etc etc... Pity you had to shoot off (sorry - no pun intended) from Wales - you could have taken my prints apart - I brought up half a dozen printed on my 3800.

regards Tim.........
Digi-snapper now (finally) turned LF shooter hmm been doing this long enuff - Now LF photog !

Me too - I think I might bite the bullet and do that too.

Well done Paul, enjoy and spend many hours in your new darkroom

Given the Epson 3880 has just superceded the 3800, you might be able to get a very good deal on a 3800 if you can find somewhere which has them in stock still.

You could try :

http://www.dpsb.co.uk/

or

http://www.bodoni.co.uk/

both of whom I've bought from before and were very helpful, good service etc. Good Luck.
