I've posted a little bit about comparative weights of double dark slides and quickload film. The increased weight isn't particularly onerous but they take up a lot more space.

Useful post that Tim. I was wondering where the break even point would be weightwise, and as you say that 6-8 sheets should be ample for most users. I know even when shooting with a 6x7 back, even in my most overzealous bracketing moods, I'd be pretty rare for me to shoot an entire roll of 10 frames in one sitting.

I was put off from getting into LF for ages because I thought that for it to work I'd have to use quickloads, and that would make it too expensive, and that darkslides sounded a nightmare for loading, dust, and weight/bulk. As it turns out darkslides are dead easy to load, i've not yet had a problem with dust, and for the low volume I shoot the bulk is minimal. And whats more the film costs are a fraction of quickloads. Be interesting to hear what realtively high-volume users make of it though (Cornish?).
I just spoke to Joe and I think he's just happy he's got to grips with MF digital. He did remind me that Peter Dombrovskis didn't shoot with quickloads and he would go out for 3 day trips with just DDS's! It's all a matter of perspective I suppose. I shall definitely be taking less B sheets though.. :-)

I already own a defunct Kodak Readyload holder, so I know just how Fuji Quickload holder owners are feeling right now. :(

Maybe there will be more of a market for your envleopes, Joanna. Where have you got to with those?

The design is "registered" by sending it to myself in a clearly postmarked envelope; there's no way I could afford patents. I have been quoted around £4,000 for the tools necessary to make the film carriers. I have contacted the only firm I could find, in Germany, that works with lightproof paper/card but don't, as yet have any idea of costings to setup the manufacturing of the envelopes. I would guess that it could well cost around £10,000 to get a viable product made in sufficient quantity and quality to make it economically viable to sell at a reasonable price point. Then, all I would need is sufficient customers to pay back the investment :)

I wonder if anyone would be willing to start a petition or some kind of letter to Fuji that we could all sign up to to protest this, so that they could see the kind of demand that there would be for this in the UK?

There would be some pretty hefty photographers on there too.

There surely must be enough demand over a long period of time to convince them that it is worth continuing.

As I said at: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1158&start=15 .....

Joanna

You mention that a German firm will need £4K for tools and a total investment of £10K to get it off the ground? Have you posted this information in APUG, as it is possible that following Fuji Japan's announcement that they are stopping production of QL after April 2010, there may be greater interest in the LF community for investing in this. Would you consider offering shares, on a non-profit basis, to raise the money, or some other incentive for LF users to invest in this idea?

I would be interested in donating £500 towards this project next year, if I could pay it in a couple of installments of £250?

Maco are also selling the new 20 sheet boxes of Acros 5x4 for €33.80 incl.VAT (shipping extra). Fuji are apparently replacing their 10 sheet boxes with 20 sheet boxes.

Seems more cost effective to switch to TMax and buy a 50 sheet box from Calumet for £46.90. http://www.calumetphoto.co.uk/item/153-166A/

What exposure latitude does T Max have?

I have 22 sheets left of Ilford's excellent Delta 100 and 80 sheets in QL format, of Acros. I have also just bought a box of 50 sheets of Velvia 100 for £42 which expire in March 2010. Kept in the fridge they will hopefully last a year or so. For the record I exposed a roll of Ilford's old 35mm XP last year after several years storage in an old suitcase in my loft. The piccies came out OK. Mind you, I wouldn't use colour negatives that were 9 years past the expiry date! Ooops.......
