Just got a V750 (thanks Bogdan)
what to do now
I have a mac but computers are not my first language so please help
It comes with some epson software and also silverfast Ai
which should I use
It also came with EZ colour do I need this

Joanna I note that you ran a course for the likes of me
Did you do a hand out or will there be another course soon

I Have ordered the better scanning mount from Doug as this seems to be key to good scans and I intend to try fluid scanning

Hi Robin

I suggest you install all the software that came with it. You will need the Epson Scan software to operate the scanner and the EZ colour for creating colour profiles for transparencies (from Wolf Faust targets, for example).... Joanna is good at explaining it in plain English

I suggest that you read through the posts in the Basic scanner questions thread, accessible below:

Joanna also advised me when scanning the images, to turn OFF Epson's colour profile and scan the images with a resolution of 1200ppi with the scan output size setting at 100%, and the colour gamut for colour images set at 48bits (the maximum) or for b&w film, set at 16bit greyscale.

Forget Silverfast, the Epson driver is plenty good enough until you get a bit more skilled

EZColor is used for profiling the scanner for transparency film; you'll also need to get a calibration target for the film type you want to scan in order to get the best out of this software.

Don't bother with fluid mounting to start with, the results from dry scnning on a Better Scanning mount are perfectly adequate for anything up to, at least, 30" x 24".

I have 2 targets that came with the EZColor
Are these OK or should I get the Wolf Faust targets instead

I take it one of the targets is reflective (this is for scanning prints) and the other may well be a default Kodak one for transparencies.

If you are not scanning the same type of film as the transparency target, then you will get better results by getting proper targets from Wolf Faust.

The film base is different so, in theory, it can make a difference.

Profiling only works, or even makes sense, for colour transparency film.

Robin: Load your software, take the plunge and get some images on screen. Enjoy! And as suggested, stick with the Epson software for now and you should soon be getting printable results. Happy scanning.

I've just put some of my first V750 scans up for viewing. These do not yet have the colour profiles applied, as I cannot do this in Lightroom 2!

Please bear in mind that these have been modified & the resolution and size reduced, to make the files quickly downloadable! My originals were scanned at only 600ppi resolution with an image magnification of 398%.... before Joanna told me I could get away with scans at 1200ppi at 100% (ie the same size as the original 5x4" trannies)

V750 scans from Norway: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1458

I am now scanning in at 1600ppi* at 100% and the files are still less than half the size of my 600ppi at 398% scans!

*I compared some of Tim's 5x4" scans (on his blog) using 1200ppi & 1600ppi & preferred the latter.

Robin,

Don't forget to test the different height settings of the plastic mounts to achieve best scan resolution. It really makes a difference. And take a look at Vincent Oliver's testing of these flatbeds on www.photo-i.co.uk. It provides a useful introduction to the choices in getting the best out of these machines. There are lots of resources out there to help you, including pages on specialist scanning websites, including Betterscanning and, if I remember correctly, on Silverfast's own site.
