Recently I have started to evaluate my small collection of barrel lenses.

The lenses I use frequently are kept in the case with their respective camera on lensboards
But the other lenses I use less frequently are just stored in a cardboard box wrapped in bubble wrap without lensboards.

Can anyone let me know of a better storage scheme - or how do you store your lenses?

I feel I would like a method of storage that has each lens kept separate and that is relatively low cost per lens.

I don't want to keep them in a glass storage cabinet or getting dusty on shelves.

I would be a little dubious about bubble wrap. Some plastics (all?) give off fumes which may or may not affect the exposed glass surfaces of lenses. I don't know this, but it is a thought. Car windscreens get coated on the inside from this effect. Perhaps archival envelopes first? Dennis.

I use the Domke lens wraps, they take a lens + panel quite comfortably and are available in various sizes.

I keep all my lenses in a glass cabinet with silica based de-humidifiers on every shelf and never have had a problem, dark humid conditions make the lenses very prone to fungus.

Robert White rang me this morning to tell me their stocks of 11" Domke lens wraps are depleted. They appear to have only the smaller and larger sizes left, and if you like grey, so much the better.

I'm guessing this could be today's daft question Paul, but here goes anyway! When you are talking about dark conditions, are you suggesting/hinting that we should be storing them out of whatever bags we have and maybe even leaving the lenscaps off?

I'm not an expert, it's just what I've been advised... leaving lenses in an environment that has a constant airflow is far more preferable than a dark airless cupboard as this encourages fungal growth. Apparently exposure to UV light also kills off the fungal spores hence some people do store their lenses with the lens caps off. I tend to keep my lens caps on as my cabinet is not entirely dust proof.

At the end of the day a little bit of common sense is required when looking after your equipment, we in the UK are fairly fortunate that we don't suffer from constant high humidity unlike somewhere like Singapore, unless you store your lenses in the bathroom cabinet that is!.

Perhaps others might have an opinion or just shoot me down in flames...

Ah, Singers.... It's really a sauna. Freshly showered, crisp white, cool, cotton clothing, step off air conditioned ship walk through dockyard gate and you're dripping like a marathon runner after running up a hill in hot weather.

if you want to experience Singers on the cheap, go fully clothed into a sauna with your camera....

When not in use (carried in camera bag) lenses are stored in a draw with a small dehumidifier.
