Tripod dust protector

Post by dennis » Wed Jul 28, 2010 12:30 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Is there an inexpensive (relatively!) bag for storing tripod/head when not in use? I've been investigating tripod bags, but they all seem a bit OTT for what I want, i.e. dust protection. When out & about I just carry the thing (or wife does) bare (tripod) so to speak. Gitzo 1325 Mk 2 with 1370 head, approx 810 x 240 mm. Thanks for any suggestions.

I've seen people use padded head covers with a drawstring neck on them on expensive ballheads.

You could probably buy a generic padded drawstring lenscase of appropriate dimensions and use that over the head. Personally I wouldn't bother with a case for the legs.

Perhaps the local golf pro shop can supply something

Are plus-fours and an argyle tanktop the new look for the discerning LF photographer?

My Gitzo came with a lightweight drawstring cover, it's probably not going to stand up to the rigors of clambering over hill and dale but it does stop dust and scuffing when in my boot.

Weren't they always? I'm never without mine...

And of course they can supply you with that nice bunny rabbit novelty club warmer which will likely fit very nicely over your tripod head. You'll be the talk of the town.

These are standard now with the CF Gitzos. You can buy them quite cheaply (for £7 + VAT + P&P) from Robert White.

My tripod gets no such mollycoddling! A bit of dust or scuffing never hurt any tripod - in fact, a few signs of wear are a badge of honour.

All this less than tender handling of your tripod could lead to it prematurely aging and investigation by Social Services. ;)

Many thanks. I did not know of the Gitzo dust bags. They sound to be the best bet. Dennis.

Mr Cornish informed me that he goes through a Gitzo every two years or so... unfortunately I cannot afford to :(

You would hope that 2 years use in the life of Mr Cornish would equal about 10+ years use for a normal person though!

I think that might be 10 years for a photofanatic and 30 years for the rest of us! ;)

My first Gitzo lasted 25 years and is now offering sterling service to a photography student who I entrusted to adopt it. :)

Tripods like partners, appreciate TLC!
