UK source of large lens caps?

Post by Acheron Photography » Sun Jan 23, 2011 4:01 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Folks

I need a 110mm diameter lens cap for a 300mm Symmar. Before I order from B&H with all the associated hassles, does anyone know of a UK source of such? Push on plastic types are fine.

Many thanks

David.

Hi David,
have you tried the auction site? I picked up a few for a 300mm lens. They ended up coming from the states but were still cheaper than buying new. There are a few sellers that seem to have lots of caps if you do a search. Also, I seem to remember someone mentioning mr. cad have lots, which wouldn't surprise me given the layout of the store.

Have you also seen the rolls royce of lens caps?; http://www.skgrimes.com/caps/index.htm

Hi Matthew

Yes, I've tried the auction site - the problem is 110mm is _big_  There are plenty of smaller ones. As you might have guessed, I am trying to get a pair for the Sironar front element, but I wanted to pick up one for my 300 at the same time and save on shipping. Ah well...

I'll trying Mr Disorganised a call on Monday - thanks for the tip on that one.

Cheers

David.

Robert White stocks, or is able to get hold of, genuine Schneider lens caps.

I have bought very large Kaiser push-on lens caps from RK Photographic in the past. Their website http://www.thedarkroom.co.uk/ only shows the snap-on types but he can get the others.

Thanks Barry. RK are very nice guys and they were very helpful, but ultimately it seems can't get something that big. I appreciate the referral though.

Kind regards

David.

Hello from France
When I'm looking for lens caps, lens hoods, filters, step-up rings, etc... etc.. besides SRB Griturn in the UK (they do not show any large lens cap in their catalogue); I always have a look at the Heliopan catalogue
http://heliopan.de/Preisliste.pdf
lens caps are on page 16, but no push-on in 110 mm ; only 90, 100 and 120.
B+W does have lens caps (=Schneider) but I did not find details yet

The German retailer foto-brenner has a large assortment of push-on lens caps (Objektivdeckel aufsteck), but their largest is 100 mm

Emmanual

Have you tried ffordes in Scotland near Beauly.
They deal in large format, new and used, I beleive.
They have a website. Cannot remember it but should come up in google.

Hope you are well.

This is what you're after, I believe.

The UK distributor is Daymen, so it might be worth dropping them a line via their B+W site.

Hi David,

Not sure if you're a member of the Large Format Photography Forum, but there's currently a 110mm Rodenstock lens cap for sale for $15. I know you were asking about a UK source, but thought I'd include the link anyway. http://www.largeformatphotography.info/ ... ight=110mm

Regards,

Rod.

Many thanks Rod, I much appreciate the reference.

Re Daymen referenced above, just for info, they appear to have gone out of business - the phone number is disconnected and email to them bounces, so I suspect the website is just a relic of a firm now failed :-(

Kind regards

David.

Hello John ! yes I know the Scottish dealer Ffordes, I have bought a few items from him in the past.

In fact as far as lens caps are concerned one should maintain a list of sizes and keep it handy all the time when photo fairs & other garage sales occur ; but a 110 mm lens cap is something unusual !

(not sure that "garage sale" is a real British expression ;) ; the French for it in use today is "vide-grenier")

We have "Car Boot Sales", as the items come straight out of the boot of the car.

Hows about a normal snap-on 105mm cap for the front. A quick google suggests the rear thread on the 300mm symmar is 77mm, so that is an even easier size to get a normal snap-on lenscap for quite cheaply.
