ebay and Velvia 50

Post by Billy Hall » Wed Dec 20, 2006 4:02 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

I'm embarking on a few shoots over xmas and have been on the look out for some cheap old stock Velvia 50. I had a browse on ebay and what struck me were the number of unscrupulous dealers selling said film at inflated prices.

Both Robert White and 7dayshop sell this in 10 sheet boxes for between £14 and £17, the rate on ebay appears to be around £20+. When did it stop being a marketplace for cheapies and become a rip off? One seller in particular is selling a 10 sheet box for £23 plus p&p which is frankly outrageous, he/she has also copied the item description wholesale from 7dayshop and upped the price somewhat.

Also with Velvia 50 being due for a re-release next year inflated prices cannot be justified surely?

Has anyone ever had any luck on ebay?

It's a commodity item. Robert White et al don't have stock anymore as far as I know. When you can't get it anymore, that makes it worth more. Pretty standard with everything, just the same old supply/demand thing.

I have 150 sheets in the freezer, and they're staying there, bought mine when the buying was good :?

I'm not convinced thats the case, I bought some a few weeks ago from Robert White and some 3 days ago from 7dayshop. My thoughts were more inclined towards the idea the ebay sellers are chancers.

Also if it's being reintroduced in April 2007(Supposedly the same stuff!) then the arguement for supply and demand isn't too relevant.

I'll swap your 150 sheets of Velvia 50 for my 150 sheets of out of date Provia!!

Billy, just like any seller of goods, whether on ebay or otherwise, if you think they're asking too much, you simply don't buy. Your choice.

Aye, and if they had actually bought up all the last remaining stock as their ads said then us Velvia users would have been stumped.

Maybe I suffer from delusions but I like to think there's an element of fairness and within small groups of like minded people (ie Large Format users) a sense of mutual assistance.

I'm quite surprised anybody has any left to be honest. When I bought some from Robert White a couple of months back, they had about 10 boxes left after my order. I'm definitely surprised someone like 7dayshop has any. Maybe I could get a few more boxes.

DJ, try 7dayshop as mine arrived this morning, just in time for some sub-zero coastline shoots over xmas. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry.....
