M.P.P. Mark V111 with jammed catch!

Hello,
Hoping a forum member may be able to help with this.
I have a friend who owns a Mark 8, MPP, 5" x 4" camera, which has been stored for many years.
He got it out to show me during a recent visit and it is in excellent cosmetic fettle, though some of the adjustments are very stiff, due to thickened lubricants. The catch which retains/locks the cover/sprung loaded light shield over the ground glass is seized or jammed.
Commonsense dictates that to unlock this catch, it is moved out toward the edge of the cover? Perhaps some kind MPP owner can offer some advice on this.

I'm assuming it works the same way as the MPP Press - in which case, it moves out to the edge of the camera. Here's a close up of mine:

Hello Neil,
Thanks for your input.
The Mark 8 differs from all previous marks in many ways, including the design of this latch.
Still hoping that we might have a Mark 8 owner on the forum.

No worries. Have you talked to the MPP owner's club?

I found a parts diagram for the MKVIII which might help. It doesn't want to display here in full for some reason - http://www.mppusers.com/mkviiipartsdrg.jpg

Neil, the board software has a size limit as to how big an image can be to display fully; if you had tagged it as an img, then people could have right-clicked to show the full image (at least in Firefox), but including the link as you have done is fine :)

Hi Colin

I no longer own a Mk 8, but I seem to remember the catch had to be pushed upwards, towards the centre of the focussing screen, to release the cover.

Colin, assuming you are talking about the catch to open the gg hood.... the problem with the catch is a common one, the catch moves on tiny springs which lose there spring and dont move. I bought one a few years back and couldnt move the catch for love nor money. The screws are on the inside and to undo them you have to move the catch.... It may come down to brute force and likely to damage the aluminium. You could try the technique that I was told - basically to force a shim into the catch (it slides as I recall) but that didnt work for me.

This also applies to the catch that opens the camera - tiny metal springs that seize solid.
