John Blakemore retrospective at Hoopers Gallery

Post by Thingy » Thu Sep 22, 2011 4:52 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Yesterday I went along to Hoopers Gallery in London to see the John Blakemore retrospective exhibition covering his work from 1955 to 2010, after reading about it on the APUG website* last week. After finally managing to get a bus to get me there from Charing Cross, changing once at the Aldwych, I found the Hoopers Gallery. Admission is free and the 56 framed photographs have work of his with which I was already familiar (his landscapes) plus work in colour which I was unaware of, the tulip series and some documentary work. Of the latter his series taken in the Hillfields area of Coventry around 1962-63 were particularly poignant in their depiction of individuals and the poverty they lived under. His tulip series were very interesting, and several reminded me of the watercolours by Elizabeth Blackadder RA**. They depict tulips in various arrangements and in various states of decay. They reminded me of a floral equivalent of the late artist, John Piper's work. I can recommend going. All the limited edition, hand printed images are on sale ranging in price (excluding VAT) from £500-850 for an unframed print, more for a framed print.
