How to reclaim VAT & import duty on item returned to US

Post by David Evans » Sun Oct 16, 2011 4:58 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Hello
Can anyone advise please.
I purchased an item from US, which was handled by Parcleforce, and I paid the import duty and VAT.
The item needs returning, and it's half the price to return it via DHL than Parcelforce (£34.40 compared with £75.70!)
I don't have to use Parcelforce to be able to reclaim the VAT and import duty do I?
Does anyone know how I would go about making the reclaim?
I have all the paperwork.
Thanks

I am no expert but I would have thought that you would need to approach the Customs and Excise and ask them.

This from the revenue site.

I found the Customs people very helpful when I was charged VAT on a VAT exemt item (the senders fault) and the two people I dealt with were quick to redress the situation once I'd faxed fulldetails of the item. There should have been a note when you recieved the item giving contact details etc and what to do if you felt the item had been taxed unfairly, they are the people to contact.

Hi Ian and Joanna
I've found the info I need. Parcelforce send out a perforated envelope come letter now, and I hadn't realised thT the query details were on a second sheet stuck to the first.
Thanks for help
