WHERE TO buy cheapest film from USA/Uk

Post by Muzamil Choudhury » Mon Dec 05, 2011 11:58 am Etc/GMT-1+01:00

HI

My cousin is going to New York in 2 weeks and I was wondering if it is worth buying some film from there as it seems allot cheaper than uk. Are there any issues with bringing it back ie. x ray machines?

The film I like is ~Kodak portra 160 - 400 speed. And also I could do with some help on which black and white film to buy. This will be my first use of the Sinar F2 that I have just purchased.

Any advice again would be appreciated

thanks

muz :)

Right there in New York is the largest photo outlet in USA as far as I know. That's B&H of course. Typically their prices are best around unless you find a sale going on at another vendor or even eBay. I cannot help out with any shipping or import fess to be dealt with.

Hi Muz

I've taken my LF camera & sheet film on several cruises to Scandinavia where the film (in Fuji QuickLoad format: Velvia 50 & 100 & Acros) has passed through the ship's on-board X-ray machine with no ill effects. Higher speed films are likely to be more sensitive to radiation.

On the B&W film front, you could perhaps buy Fuji's Acros more cheaply in the states*. I currently have to order the 5x4 sheet film from Germany as it is no longer sold in the UK in sheet film format. I now have a freezer full of film.

Note that B&H famously keeps orthodox religious hours; it's closed Friday afternoon and all day Saturday.

You can shop all day on Sunday though.

I had a friend collect some film for me from B&H on a recent trip to New York. Don't rely on the website to indicate the true extent of their stocks though, in my case the website showed plenty of stock of 4x5 Velvia 50 but on arriving at the store my friend found thay had completely sold out (managed to get plenty of FP4 and Acros though).

It definitely needs to come back in hand luggage and not go into the checked baggage and much higher powered xray machines used thereon.
