Epson V750

Hi all. There's been plenty discussion about flatbed v. drum scanners. From time to time I have drum scans done when funds allow and for LARGE prints there's a difference. (Don't want to wade into that debate).
I have an Epson V750 and until recently I was happy enough with output via Silverfast. I use it mainly to digitise my backlog of LF/MF negs and trannies for output at 12x12 to 20x20 (inches). But recently I've been using the Epson software simply because it delivers a sharper scan than the Silverfast (even when I use a multi-scan). Exposure/colour etc can't be as finely tuned as in Silverfast but I have Photoshop to cure that. I'd always assumed that sharpness was basically a mechanical function (everything flat and aligned etc). Any clues? Apologies for ignorance in advance!
Cheers
Michael
