Do standards for frames and mat board sizes exist? Which regions/countries follow them and do they differ between regions/countries?

I can't recall there ever being a standard, I suppose in the past it used to be based on B&W print sizes, 10x8, 12x16 etc. I do know that the standard mat size for photographic club competitions is 40x50cm. You only just have to look at Nielsen frames catalogue for the myriad of frame sizes on offer http://www.nielsenbainbridge.com/eng/pr ... rames.html

I am not aware of standards, although the buying public are aware of cheap frames from the likes of Ikea and Hobbicraft which have the sizes 40x50cm and 30x40cm. Beyond that, you're in to the realm of paper sizes and film sizes. Some work OK with each other, but not all - also depends on whether you have a mount or just a photo. There is some overlap, although likely fortuitous: for my latest project, I have 1/2 plate film which prints very well on quarter Imperial because of very similar aspect ratios (1.36 and 1.37).
Let us know what you find out.
